Hi, I use Linux as my main OS, but I also have two Windows 7 Ultimate running at all times, I only tried Eclipse on Linux and this is about that.

I'm learning programming and have been getting into computers since 2009. I've set up a programming environment in Linux a few times and when setting up Eclipse, found problems. I often end up with Eclipse not starting anymore.

This is what I do, I setup the environment with a lot of tools and IDE's for programming and when I set up Eclipse I install it from the distro repo and begin to add software in "install new software", I remember on two ocasions that it ended with Eclipse always hanging at the loading window(the small one). The other setup I remember that, when trying to add alot of software, the program couldn't install any software.

Do you have any guidelines for me?

I program in C, C++, C#, Java and Python. Still only learning C and C#, and haven't started the others, those are the languages I'll be using.

My distro's are Fedora and Debian.

Note that I have never actually programmed in Eclipse, but have heard good things about it so I want to try it and see if it becomes one of my tools.

Don't install from the distribution repository. Download directly from
the Eclipse web site and unzip the download to a folder in your home
directory. I have a separate folder for each Eclipse release train
~/kepler, ~/luna, etc.

Edit the eclipse.ini file to explicitly point to an installed JDK/JRE.

Did you read the Announcement message at the top of this forum, titled "Linux + Eclipse users, read this!" - the gist, don't use Eclipse installed from a Linux repo, just download it from www.eclipse.org
