How do I install a groovyfx plugin?

On Kepler:
I've tried Help, Install New Software
Click Available Software Sites
Enter the http:// and
dist.springsource.org/release/GRECLIPSE/e4.3/
into Add Site, OK

But the result is "There is no site selected"

The field next to the Add button is a selection drop down. Unless you typed the URL directly into it, you still have to actually select one of its items.

I installed Eclipse Luna to see if there's a difference.
Available Software Sites dialog:
I select an item that has:
Name blank
Location https:// (plus next line - I'm not allowed to include urls yet)
github.com/groovyfx-project/groovyfx

Click Add (after I selected this item)

Add Site dialog appears with
Name blank
Location http://

Question: If I selected an item with url, why does it ignore that?
So I enter the url in this Add Site dialog, as shown above.

Click OK; dialog goes away, back to Available Software Sites dialog.
Message appears: This repository is currently not available.

Question: If the repository is not available, why show it as available?
If you go to that github url, it's a valid page.
What's the problem?

btw the Available Software Sites also has this item for groovyfx:
http:// (plus next line)
groovyfx-project.github.com

I don't think this is a valid site; whereas the url in my previous post is valid (it starts with https and ends with groovyfx)

both appear as Available Software Sites.

Back to Kepler.
Help, Install New Software
Available Software dialog appears
No need to click on Available Software Sites link.

Select in Work with list: Groovy Eclipse (dist.springsource...)
Items appear below - software Name, Version
I checked the 2 (Required) items.
Click Next... software was installed.

I'm glad to see some progress, but confused about Eclipse versions.

Why does Kepler reference different Groovy software?
I would expect newer Luna to have the latest.

The Groovy plug-in for Eclipse is from codehaus.org. You'll do better
going to them for support.

Thanks for the tip, but my questions here are about Eclipse, not Groovy.

If I would ask these to Codehaus, they'll say "That's an Eclipse issue".
Would you not agree?

Regarding my experience with Luna (Version: Luna Release (4.4.0))
The Available Software dialog includes these items in the "Work with" list:

> https://github.com/groovyfx-project/groovyfx
When selecting either, you get this error message:
"Could not find"

Why are they listed if the software is not indeed available?
Shouldn't the program test this?

If I enter the first item http://groovyfx-project.github.com in my browser,
it displays http://groovyfx.org/

If I enter the second item https://github.com/groovyfx-project/groovyfx in my browser,
it displays https://github.com/groovyfx-project/groovyfx

As I said, I went back to Kepler (Version: Kepler Service Release 2 Build id: 20140224-0627)
The Available Software dialog includes these items in the "Work with" list:

We know the first item doesn't work.
I selected the SpringSource item; the download worked.

it changes to dist.springsource.org/release/GRECLIPSE/e4.3/
and a cryptic file "download" appears. Apparently it's not designed for manual downloading.

So the other question I asked was:
Why doesn't the newer Luna version include the SpringSource item?

As you can see, these are questions for Eclipse.

The install new software dialog allows you to add things to the Eclipse
version you have running. It utilizes update sites to retrieve the
software to add. Note that an update site is NOT the same as a web
site. The url of an update site may or may not show anything if you
paste it into your browser. Third party providers can make additional
features available to Eclipse by providing an update site for their
software. In general, these sites are separate from Eclipse and are
maintained by the third party provider. Eclipse software provides tools
to help them create these sites, but the ultimate responsibility is the
third parties.

The update sites you list are not provided with either the Kepler or
Luna downloads from Eclipse. They had to be added by something you did
after installing Eclipse or you had to download an Eclipse version from
another location that includes them for you. There are several ways
that an update site can get added. The most obvious one is manually
where you type (or paste) the update site url into the Work with: text
box. However, installing a plugin can also add the plugins update site
to the list of available sites. If you used the Eclipse Marketplace to
add a plugin, it is possible that the plugin added the github and
springsource entries you reference.

Just because the sites are now in your list of available sites doesn't
mean that Eclipse has anything to do with putting them there. In the
end, you have to make sure that the site urls are accurate and point to
actual update sites. You have to get that information from the third
party that provides the plugin. If you typed a url into the Work with
or the Add available sites dialog and you receive a message about it not
being valid, you have either typed the wrong url, the site isn't a valid
update site, or possibly you are behind some firewall or proxy server
that is blocking your access to the site.

I agree and I disagree. Even if it's an Eclipse problem (I'm speaking
hypothetically here and not about your specific problem which David gave
you a partial answer for), the special community uses Eclipse and sorts
out their problems using Eclipse and so will often know better how to
answer than so-called Eclipse specialists in the general, newcomer's forum.

I re-installed Kepler to confirm that. The "Available Software" dialog includes these items; an item for groovy is not there:
Mylyn for Eclipse Kepler - http://download.eclipse.org/mylyn/releases/kepler
The Eclipse Project Updates - http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/4.3
Kepler - http://download.eclipse.org/releases/kepler

So I'm back to my original question:
How do I install a groovyfx plugin?

When I go to an Eclipse site to download software, e.g.
https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-ide-java-developers/keplersr2
I assume whatever they provide for download is something I can install on my computer.

Naively perhaps, I had the same confidence when I clicked within Eclipse (Help, Install New Software) that the software listed there is something I can install on my computer! How am I supposed to know what plugin software is ready for inclusion into Eclipse? As you stated, the url for updates is probably not a regular website url. I'm not experienced in preparing plugin software; as a newcomer, I shouldn't be editing a list of software sites.

I would expect Eclipse to provide a read-only list of plugin software as they do when providing the basic Eclipse Kepler package.

Eclipse is an open source product that provides a framework for other
people to extend. The Eclipse developers have no way of knowing all of
the plugins that people have developed to work with Eclipse. That is
why we keep telling you that you need to work with the developers of the
plugin. They are the ones that can tell you what versions of Eclipse
their plugins are compatible with and provide the instructions for
installing their plugins.

Google Groovy Eclipse plugin. You will find that they have an extensive
bit of information on installing and using their plugin including an
installation tutorial.

At this point I understand how to obtain a plugin for my Eclipse usage.
IMO the process could be made easier, but that's another story.
I have one question.

It goes back to my original question: 'How do I install a groovyfx plugin?'
I installed a groovy plugin; I can make groovy projects and classes.
But I get an error message on:

import groovyx.javafx.GroovyFX

This website talks about groovyfx but not an Eclipse plugin:
http://groovyfx.org/
Is a groovyfx plugin not available?

Again, your best bet at getting an answer is to ask the developers that
provide groovyfx. These forums are not for general programming
questions. They are for asking questions related to the tools written
by the Eclipse developers. If there is something available, the
groovyfx developers would be the most likely people to know.
