Some toolbar items like show whitespace, vertical selection etc are grayed out in the xml editor but not in the java one (I have customized the Java perspective but not sure since this is the case)

Is it a bug or a feature ? Where is this set ?

The shortcut for "show whitespace" (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+W) works fine in the xml editor too - I guess for the other grayed out buttons the shortcuts work too (haven't tested)

Eclipse Java EE IDE for Web Developers.

Version: Luna M7 Release (4.4.0M7)

The XML editor is not provided by JDT, but by the Web Tools Project (WTP).

You have better chances getting your answer when asking in their forum.

Still could you tell me if this behavior is reproducible (in case you use WTP that is)?
