Hello,

I've never used Eclipse as an IDE before and am having a lot of trouble with the interface. I currently have a .java file that I have been working on for a while, but I wanted stronger debugging tools. However, upon opening the file in eclipse, I am unable to compile and run it at all. Moreover, a folder named ".metadata" appears in the directory where my file is.

You should choose a good tutorial to follow. There are some associated
directly with Eclipse, but my favorite to recommend are from
http://www.vogella.de.
