Hello!

I wonder what BIRT version should i currently use for my production
system reporting. I've found BIRT alpha versions more stable than stable
versions (BIRT 2.1RC5 versus BIRT 2.1.1 and BIRT 2.2M5 versus BIRT
2.1.2). Feature that is more important for me is data displayed by BIRT
to be correct - yeah, i can always comapre data displayed by BIRT with
data from direct SQL queries.

The reason because i write this post is that designer from last BIRT
release 2.1.2 constantly crashes when i try to preview.

Thanks for your feedback,

We do not recommend milestone builds for production.
The reason being is not necessarily stability but functional changes
that may occur before release. That said there is nothing preventing
you from doing it.

Hello Piotr,

To expand on what Jason had to say, one of the big problems with the Milestone
builds is that they are synchronized with the other Milestone products in
the Europa release. If a dependency in one of the other projects (EMF for
instance) changes, then it could have significant impact on future releases.
We do every thing we can to prevent that, but it still happens.

For instance if you look at the latest release train: M1 was relatively unstable,
M2 was good, M3 and M4 not so good, M5 was very stable. The causes for the
change were sometimes changes in our code (M1 had a number of significant
re-factors), they could be caused by a change in dependency (EMF had some
changes im M4), or it could be based on the introduction of new components
(the M6 build will have the Excel and Word emitters, and the CrossTab all
new BIRT features.

Sorting out all these variables is virtually impossible, what we can say
with a high level of confidence is that the production release should be
the most stable product.
