Hi Adam
I suppose this post will almost sound like an announcement of sorts.
The IBM Rational Software GMF team in Canada has taken over responsibility
of GEF. We actually took over this responsibility back in the first quarter
2006. You likely have seen the posts from Steve Shaw, Mohammed Mostafa,
Cherie Mahoney (Revells) and others, as well as builds put together by Tom
MacDougall. In fact, the GEF 3.2 release was assembled by the GMF team.
I will agree that for GEF 3.2.1, it was pretty quiet. Quite frankly this is
a reflection of the stability of GEF and the excellent work Randy, Pratik
and others have put into GEF over the years.
We did manage to get one critical GEF Bugzilla resolved into a new GEF 3.2.1
maintenance build. I will post when it is available this week. The GEF 3.2.1
maintenance release will also be part of the Eclipse 3.2.1 Callisto release
train.
Going forward we have tentatively triaged a bunch of Bugzillas to the next
GEF 3.2.2 maintenance release.
We also plan to post GEF 3.3 plans in the coming months.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, let us know.

I have mentioned this before, but I still haven't seen much activity.
The project plan doesn't have any real information and hasn't been
updated in months. Unless I'm doing something wrong, I can't find any
bugs targeted at 3.3. Most of the planned fixes for 3.2.2 weren't
resolved, but are still targeted. Also, I can't get a response as to
whats happening to the project.
Is anyone else concerned about this? The reason for my frustration is
that I have real products based on GEF, like many of you, and I'm
worried its headed for the archive heap. If that's the case, I would at
least like to know so I can prepare accordingly.

contribute patches / fixes / enhancements. if enough of them pile up
without being integrated into a future release, someone will eventually
fork GEF.

Hi Adam.
If a Bugzilla is not assigned to a milestone, your best bet is to add a
comment that you are interested in seeing the issue fixed in the current
release and cc yourself to the Bugzilla. Even better would be to pitch in a
offer to contribute a patch that fixes the issue.

Hi Adam, same here, and I am concerned. While one of my requests at
bugs.eclipse.org has been replied to by Anthony after 2 weeks, two other
of them are there unreplied for almost a year now. Although Anthony
said "Who starting these rumors, no GEF is not dead, it was never even
sick.", I am afraid development of GEF has ceased. Although I hope it
is just a "temporary" (albeit quite long lasting now) slowdown and/or
the GEF team not optimally communicating to the outside, it just does
not look active anymore.

Before we start down the road of developing an adversarial relationship with
the Eclipse community, I would like to remind you that there is no
entitlement to service in open source. The only way to get what you want is
to join the community.
You can contribute to improvement by making some concrete contributions. I
would start by looking up the Bugzillas you want fixed and access how you
have contributed to that end.
Did you help the committers isolate the problem and see it with their own
eyes?
Did you provide detailed instructions so that they can make it fail for
themselves?
Did you attach a failing JUnit test or code snippet reproducing the problem?
Did you attach a patch that solves the issue?

Anthony,
I am not a native English speaker but I am not aware that my words sound
in any way demanding. I know the game of open source. And I sure tried
joining the community by posting a report about what I think is a bug.
And if "adversarial" means what I just looked up in an online
dictionary, then I must say the only one that I feel is getting
adversarial is you, Anthony. IMO, not being able to express critics,
frustration or fear in a what I feel objective way without pissing off
developers just does not serve anybody.
So I looked again at bug report 143227. I think I posted a description
that is precise enough to let anybody reproduce what I described as a
bug. I did not attach a JUnit test nor a code snippet because simple
user action reproduces it. I could not attach a patch because although
I actually (really!) tried to find my way through the code it is one of
the many areas that I do not understand enough to do that. Had I been
given a few pointers, maybe I could have done it.
I filed that report almost one year ago. Not a single follow up. All I
want is _some_ reaction so that I know I am not _ignored_. To know
somebody at the other end actually _cares_ for the users that _want_ to
join the community.
