Recently, I wrote a blog entry (http://blog.mea-culpa.net/?p=14) about
possibly having an Ecilpse bugday to improves Eclipse's image in the
community (not IBM owned yadda yadda yadda). I think this newsgroup
might be a better forum for this type of discussion then my blog. Here's
the original post.

Ed Burnette informed me that you guys do something like this by sending
an email out in the newsgroups every 6 weeks or so but I don't think
this is structured enough. Doesn't have that community feeling ;)

Cheers,

~ Chris

Over in Gentoo, we have something called Gentoo Bugday
(http://bugday.gentoo.org/). What a bugday exactly consists of is
highlighted in a GLEP (http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/glep/glep-0006.html).

To summarize,

Gentoo Linux should have one day a month that is devoted to
clearing out bugs, and accepting new ebuilds from bugzilla. This one day
a month should not replace a developers normal bug tracking duties. This
“bug day” should become something that involves the user community to
make them feel closer to the developers.

I believe Eclipse should consider doing something similar to gain more
activity from people outside the Eclipse community. Every month, some
developers (from the various projects) could take time out of their day
to highlight some bugs that would be appropriate for the bugday and
spend some time with the community helping solve some of these bugs.
This would foster a community that would be more capabable of
contributing to Eclipse and, more importantly, feel closer to the
Eclipse developers.

I’m not sure how to propose this idea (the eclipse proposal process?),
but what do you guys think?

It's a regularly scheduled event. Erich Gamma talks about milestones and
testing days and decompression in this interview:

I consider myself fairly in the Eclipse "loop" and I had no idea it
existed. Why doesn't the foundation do a better job in announcing it and
promoting it to spur community help?

Just a thought :)

Cheers,

~ Chris
