I have a fat corporate connection to the Internet but have spent the
last three hours trying to download Eclipse 3.1. Just seeing the
download page was difficult (the New and Noteworthy page is still
refreshing), the mirrors that were listed as having the files finally
admitted they didn't really, and the big download from Canada has
already given out in the middle once. The retry is only about 1/3 done
as I write this.

Mike writes "We've doubled the bandwidth at www.eclipse.org, so
hopefully the Million Download Challange will make me pay up big time to
my favourite charity."
( http://milinkovich.blogspot.com/2005/06/and-race-begins.html). However,
it's going to be awfully hard to make it at this pace.

Honestly, Ed, do *you* need to be downloading 3.1 in the middle of the
big rush? I mean, really? I'm holding off...

Maybe you should try to convince someone to setup an Eclipse Mirror on
that fat corporate connection of yours... See how it thins out ;)

I think it would have been much smarter to set up an official Bittorrent
server for the Eclipse releases as distributed systems are the best
solution for fast distribution of heavily requested big downloads.

Ciao, Michael.

Eclipse might be too fat to publish in a conventional (HTTP / FTP) way. =

You should think about bittorrent or other networks which perform far =

BTW, I love Eclipse - with all my heart - but these download issues are =

Even more if you issue a "million download challenge".

I don't get www.eclipse.org to load right now. Looks like doubling the
bandwidth simply wasn't enough. If people can't even browse the website,
let alone access the mirrors page, maybe the webserver serving the
downloads should be separate from the normal one, if that's somehow
possible. The newsserver seems to be separate as well, as news access is
working OK.

As it looks right now, the Eclipse Foundation has organized a
devastating and long-lasting Denial Of Service attack on itself ;-)

BitTorrent used to be an option (circa 2.0 or 2.1 release, IIRC) - why
is it no longer being used for distribution?

For about 2 hours now we've had a spare server running as a mirror site
on a dedicated 100Mb line. It's been handling it fair share of
requests, and eclipse.org is no longer saturated.

Thanks to everyone for being patient!

If I remember correctly, it was no official Eclipse.org server, but only
linked to from the Eclipse.org site some time after the release.

Ciao, Michael.

Would it be legal to upload Eclipse to SourceForge.Net or Download.com?

Well actually that was why I was trying to download it, to copy it to
our local mirror so nobody else would try to download it :)
