Installation problem [message #20368] Tue, 28 June 2005 09:06 Go to next message

Hi,

I've gone through the guide
http://eclipse.org/tptp/home/downloads/installguide/InstallG uide40.html
where item 7 - hyades.rac.<OS_NAME>_4.0-YYYYMMDD_HHMM.zip does not apply

I've read presentation slides from EclipseCon

I've watched the latest screencast
http://www.eclipse.org/org/june05release/screencasts/10-tptp Installation/tptpInstallation.html

I've installed the full EMF package (emf-sdo-xsd-SDK-I200506230200.zip),
tptp runtime (tptp.runtime-TPTP-4.0-200505210100A.zip), and agent controller
(tptpdc.win_ia32-TPTP-4.0-200505210100A.zip)

Yet, TPTP feature/plugins are not loaded and are not shown in the Plugin
Details in the about box. There is no error in plugin loading. Only the
agent controller run without problem, but that can't be tested because
plugins are not loaded.

The Eclipse SDK I'm using is RC3 fresh install. Attached is the listing from
my plugin folder.
Please provide a proper guideline on the installation.

Thanks

Regards,
CK Ng

Your problem is caused by not downloading the correct versions of the
required plug-ins.

When you go to the download web page of build TPTP-4.0-200505210100A:
http://www.eclipse.org/tptp/home/downloads/drops/TPTP-4.0-20 0505210100A.html,
there is a "Requirements" section at the very bottom of the page. Please
use the Eclipse, EMF, and XSD drivers listed there. This particular build
of TPTP should be running on Eclipse M7 as opposed to RC3.

I will open a defect about the 7th step of the installation guide that you
have mentioned below.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Didn't notice the requirement, was searching for that.
However, in the screencast, RC2 is used for the demo. Which version do I
need to get it working for 3.1 final since it is out?

I've rechecked the screencast, it is using I200504070700 drop of EMF and XSD

However, both files are no longer available
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/tools/em f/downloads/drops/2.1.0/I200504070700/emf-sdo-SDK-I200504070 700.zip

From the link:
The selected file is invalid, or it is no longer available for download.

You have to wait for a later driver of TPTP4.0 that is functional on the
final driver of the Eclipse 3.1. I am sorry for the invalid requirements
links of TPTP 4.0. I have sent an urgent email to our build staff to fix
this problem.

Thanks,

Ali M.

This email indicates some of the challenges that I encountered while
attempting to complete the suggested installation procedure for the
Eclipse Test & Performance Tools Platform Project using Installation Guide
v4.0.0

After completing steps 1 thru 8, skipping optional steps 9-10, and
completing steps 11 -12, I launched to the "Agent Controller Getting
Started Guide". The following comments indicate how I proceeded to use the
instructions found in the Agent Controller Getting Started Guide:

The Notation paragraph of "Getting started with Agent Controller -
Windows" indicates that "the Hyades Data Collection Engine has been
unzipped." This step is not included in the installation procedures of
Installation Guide. Apparently it has been presumed that the data
collection engine has been previously installed. However, since the
SetConfig.bat file is needed, I downloaded the Hyades Data Collection
Engine for Windows. Download instructions were found at Installing Hyades"

Noticing the procedural similarities between Installing Hyades and the
Installation Guide v4.0.0, I downloaded
hyades.runtime_3.2A_20050301_1749.zip,
hyades.examples_3.2A_20050301-1749.zip, hyades.test_3.2A_20050301_1749.zip
and hyades.rac.nt_3.2A_20050301_1749.zip. Only files in the Hyades Data
Collection Engine for Windows, i.e.,
(hyades.rac.nt_3.2A_20050301_1749.zip), were used to continue with the
installation procedure. The Hyades Data Collection Engine files included
the \bin folder that is referenced in the "Agent Controller Getting
Started Guide" instructions. Feature and Plugin folders that are included
in the Hyades Data Collection Engine download were not unzipped to the
Eclipse directory.

At this point, it seemed that I had all the files that were indicated by
the installation instructions as necessary to install the Test &
Performance features in their recommended directories. So I continued to
proceed with step 1 of the Notation paragraph, answered the prompts and
noticed that the serviceconfig.xml file was generated:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<AgentControllerConfiguration activeConfiguration="default"
filePort="10005" jvm="C:\\Program
Files\\Java\\jre1.5.0_01\\bin\\client\\jvm.dll" loggingDetail="LOW"
loggingLevel="INFORMATION" port="10002" processPolling="true"
securedPort="10003" version="3.2.0">
<AgentControllerEnvironment configuration="default">
<Variable name="JAVA_PATH" position="replace" value="C:\\Program
Files\\Java\\jre1.5.0_01\\bin\\java.exe"/>

value="%RASERVER_HOME%\\lib\\hl14.jar"/>
<Variable name="CLASSPATH" position="append"
value="%RASERVER_HOME%\\lib\\hlcommons.jar"/>
<Variable name="CLASSPATH" position="append"
value="%RASERVER_HOME%\\lib\\hlcore.jar"/>
<Variable name="CLASSPATH" position="append"
value="%RASERVER_HOME%\\lib\\hlevents.jar"/>
<Variable name="CLASSPATH" position="append"
value="%RASERVER_HOME%\\lib\\hlcbe101.jar"/>
<Variable name="CLASSPATH" position="append"
value="%RASERVER_HOME%\\lib\\ecore.jar"/>
<Variable name="CLASSPATH" position="append"
value="%RASERVER_HOME%\\lib\\common.jar"/>
</AgentControllerEnvironment>
<Application configuration="default" executable="java.exe"
location="%SYS_TEMP_DIR%" path="%JAVA_PATH%"/>
<Hosts configuration="default">
<Allow host="LOCAL"/>
</Hosts>
<Plugin path="%RASERVER_HOME%\\plugins"/>
</AgentControllerConfiguration>

After receiving the serviceconfig.xml file, I proceeded to step 2 of the
Notation paragraph. There was some ambiguity in my mind regarding the use
of the terminology 'system's PATH" and "system's PATH environment
variable". Windows has environment variables which are categorized as
"User variables for Administrator" and "System variables". I chose not to
adjust 'system' variables and included a user environment variable called
"PATH" in the list of environmental variables. The value was set to the
recommended <unzip directory>\bin value.

I read the comment in step 3 of the Notation paragraph and then went to
the procedure as provided in paragraph "Running the server as an
Application".

Step 1 of "Running the server as an Application" indicates that there
should have been a RASERVER_HOME environment variable. Since I had no
previous Hyades software there was no RASERVER_HOME environment variable,
so I created one and set its value as directed to point to the <unzip
directory>

I proceeded to step 2 to start RAServer.exe and stopped it in step 3.

I read the instructions for "Configuring and starting AgentController" -
which included this comment:

Invocation of the Java Profiler from the Hyades Workbench

The Java Profiler can be launched from the Hyades workbench.
Open the Profiling Perspective and you can launch applications using the
'Profile' menu contribution or the toolbar button.
Applications can be run either using code within the current Hyades
workbench's workspace or binaries that are on the file system..

I presumed that the "Hyades Workbench" was a reference to the Eclipse
software, which now included the tptp, emf, xsd, hyades files, for
Profiling and Logging java applications. At this point it appeared to me
that all the steps were completed so I decided to boot up Eclipse to see
what changes would be evident.

The Eclipse software booted up without difficulty and I was pleasantly
surprised to see the new features. I opened the "Profiling" Perspective by
opening the "Profiling and Logging" Perspective and noticed a new
perspective appeared as well as the additional profiling icons. I was able
to run an existing application without using the "profile" feature. I
noticed that a Log Navigator tab appeared in the Navigator View component.
When I opened the Log Navigator tab an error message appeared. It
indicated that "An error has occurred when creating this view". I referred
to the error log to review the list of errors that were logged. They
appeared not to be too onerous - given the alternative procedure that I
used.

Now I am seeking additional guidance that may help me prepare the Eclipse
software so that it provides the profiling and logging features. A copy of
the error log can be provided should it be necessary. However I suspect
that my installation procedure may include flaws that could indicate to an
expert why errors appeared in the log. (Note: I have read the recent
archive of emails indicating that java 1.5 has not been tested with the
current Eclipse. My sense is that there are other factors in my procedure
that will be more obvious to an expert which will suggest why errors were
logged.)

Thank you in advance for any suggestions you may make.

regards,
gerard

Hi Gerard,

The links for the requirements of build 20050301 seem to be invalid. Please
try and downloading a more recent build that has valid requirement links.
Give the following build a try:

http://www.eclipse.org/tptp/home/downloads/drops/TPTP-4.0.0- 200507081732.html

From this page, download the following and unzip them in the same eclipse
directory:

TPTP Runtime (all):
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/tptp/4.0 .0/TPTP-4.0.0-200507081732/tptp.runtime-TPTP-4.0.0-200507081 732.zip
Eclipse 3.1.0:
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.1-20 0506271435/index.php
EMF 2.1.0:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/tools/em f/downloads/drops/2.1.0/R200507070200/emf-sdo-SDK-2.1.0.zip
XSD 2.1.0:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/tools/em f/downloads/drops/2.1.0/R200507070200/xsd-SDK-2.1.0.zip

Download the agent controller in a different directory:
Windows (runtime):
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/tptp/4.0 .0/TPTP-4.0.0-200507081732/tptpdc.win_ia32-TPTP-4.0.0-200507 081732.zip

Start the agent controller using this document:
http://www.eclipse.org/tptp/home/downloads/installguide/agen tcontroller_33/win_ia32/getting_started.html

Start the eclipse workbench.

Hope this helps,

Ali M.
