Characters cannot be mapped [message #201997] Wed, 28 March 2007 14:28 Go to next message

Hello! Newcommer here. Not sure if this is the correct forum for this. I
hope someone will direct me if I have posted this to the wrong place.

I've noticed that Eclipse (version 3.2.1) won't allow me to save a web
file who's special characters are not compliant with the character coding
that has been declared for that web page file.

Eclipse pops up a message informing me that some characters cannot be
mapped to ISO-8859-1 (this is the character encoding I use for my web
pages). And, I can't save the file until I clean up those bad characters.

It's a featuer I don't need since I use a HTML validator that will point
out these bad characters, AND tell me exactly which ones they are and
where they are located in the file. Eclipse doesn't do that.

Is there a way to turn this off so that I can save in Eclipse, regardless?

Much thanx,
Chris

Chris,

This sounds likely to be a question about tools provided by WTP. I'm
pretty sure there are ways to turn off the validators (probably via
preference) but I don't know how. I've added the WTP newsgroup to the
"to" list, so hopefully someone will see it in that newsgroup and answer.

Nope, as upon save using the wrong encoding the character(s) would be
destroyed. Either use a different encoding or valid characters.

Dani, I don't think you understand: there is no "upon save" in my scenario.

Using a different character encoding on the web pages is not an option.

It's not that I'm trying to add invalid characters.

I'm not dissing Eclipse at all here, rather making a recommendation:
Eclipse should allow files to be saved ragardless of characters. The
function, in its current state, only goes part way in to the realm of
"character validation". If the developers want to implement validation in
Eclipse, it should be expanded to include, for example, highlighting the
lines where the bad characters exists, and underlining the offending
characters, rather than just refusing to save.

I'm not sure if it will solve your problem but you could try turning off
the validator under window > preferences > validation.
