Hello everybody,

we are working on a larger application solely developed on basis of Eclipse 4.3.1.
Just recently, we came across the question about how we display progress in our application and how we handle asynchronous background processes wrapped as jobs and runnables (e.g. within wizards).

Now, I wonder if there will be something new in this regard in Eclipse Luna?
I am mainly referring to this post of Paul Webster: Eclipse Jobs API. Unfortunately, I could not find any information on the status of porting the progress view to pure e4. I would be willing to help out if required!

Also, this Eclipse Wikipedia entry suggests a few ideas of how to deal with jobs in e4. I think this is a good approach, as the current solution has its drawbacks which are well explained in the article. Is there something planned already for one of the coming Eclipse releases?

Thanks and have a good day,

Georg

Hi Georg,

https://bugs.eclipse.org/401655 is the bug that tracks the work on a
progress view. Unfortunately not much has happened yet. Thus, your
contribution would be more than welcome.

Thx for this information.
I'll have a look into porting the view.
Seems like Lars Vogel would be the right person to talk to about this as he has been a mentor of a corresponding GSoC project.

But other than that, are there other thoughts or things going on in regard to the JObs API in general?

Best,

Georg

There hasn't been any GSoC project related to an e4 progress view.

Generally speaking, communication at Eclipse happens in the public.
Either via bugs or (e4-dev) mailinglist.

Yes, you are right. What I actually meant was the 'proposed' GSoC project.

Anyway, I switched over to bug 401655 for further discussion. Smile

As it turns out, Wojciech Sudol is already working on an implementation [1].
