I was hoping to use eDiagram to maintain an existing eCore model, but I
can't see a way to get existing references into the diagram. If I try and
drag a reference from the outline to the diagram, the latter locks up.

Am I trying to do something that is beyond eDiagram's current
capabilities, or does the lockup represent a bug that is masking this
feature?

(eclipse/gef 3.1.1 with eDiagram from the 3.1.1 download page)

It should work. Maybe you're running into a bug. Do you see anything in
the error log? Do you have the right version of EMF? Open a bug report
with details to reproduce in the ediagram example if the problem persists.

Resolved as described in

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=112012

This is a linux-related issue. GEF was not finding libcairo.so.1 which is
shipped with eclipse as a temporary measure before it is released with
GTK+. Just needed to make a symlink to it from /lib. Probably a
common trap for new players!
