Hello,

I am interested in understanding how you would use the Excel output from
BIRT if BIRT had this feature today.

o How important is the formatting in the Excel output?

o Do you expect all tables in a report to be dumped out in Excel?

o How about multiple work sheets from the report?

o Do you expect to be doing a lot of calculations and other
traditional Excel like manipulations of data?

o Any other thoughts on the use case?

Hi, i will give my opnion too for this topic.

Very!!! Sales & Administration Department on my company use excel
very very often.

* Do you expect all tables in a report to be dumped out in Excel?

Yes.

* How about multiple work sheets from the report?

Mmm, i am not sure about it.

* Any other thoughts on the use case?

I am thinking on charts but is not a critical issue, because i can do it
on excel.

Yes, data on Excel is easy to manipulate and customize.

Currently, we are able to export table-only formatted data from BIRT to
excel by ctrl-A'ing the page and pasting it into Excel v2003.
Unfortunately, this does not work too well for reports with charts ...
or reports with multiple sections (separated by manual page breaks
within the report design).

As for the multiple worksheet option, my vote is to only put data onto
separate worksheets if the report design has a page-break specified. If
the data happens to span multiple pages in HTML format (and no page
break is forced by the report design), then it should all go into a
single worksheet in Excel.

As for data manipulation: We export the data as mentioned above into a
read-only worksheet and then have other Excel documents that manipulate
the "raw" data as needed.

It would be good if the Report Viewer would support this new format as
well. For example, "&__format=xls" and have the option to control some
common parameters via url parameters rather than programmatically having
to create an Excel emitter.

On a side note, I have been rather displeased with the usability and
performance of the Tribix project. It is *very* slow. The user
interface is not friendly. I stopped using it when the author rejected
my bug requesting the creation of an "all on one page" feature.
Hopefully, you Actuate developers can come up with something better.
