I should change the name for the content in the BIRT Report Developer Guide
in the online help for the next release. It's rather misleading.
The content in the online help is a small subset of the what is in the
published book. The online help provides a set of procedures about how to
use individual elements of the BIRT Report Designer user interface. The book
provides these procedures and many more. More significantly, it contains
considerable overview and conceptual material to explain the full process of
report design and development which will enable you to use the whole
Designer in an effective way, both individually and as part of a team. At
approximately 700 pages in length, this book is a substantial volume that is
much more than a guide to the UI.
Don't forget too, the Integrating and Extending BIRT book, which describes
the programming capabilities of the BIRT environment, from scripting,
through coding reporting and charting applications, to using the extension
points to provide custom functionality to your BIRT environment - or to
contribute to the community. :-)
