I like say this say that this is a exciting project. I'd like to give my
initial feedback to your proposal in this posting. I have some concerns
that I will discuss. I will then jump into a few suggestions of relate
project work in WTP, Beehive and Apache.

I have two general concerns. One there doesn't appear to be any initial
code donation to the project. This is the one thing that I liked about
the WTP project. Once IBM and ObjectWeb put forth a significant code
donation, I did see them walking away from the project. Since there
appears to be no plan for any initial code donation or starting point,
it seems that Actuate has little to lose. There are already several open
source project that compete with proposal. Why should the community join
this project?

Second concern. Your proposal makes a point that the report design
format will be open source and XML based. I would have thought that this
would be a given. Is some of this not going to be open source?

Enough with the concerns on to the fun stuff. It appears that you could
reuse several views or components from the WTP project. They already
have Data View that allows SQL queries and etc. They have several types
of editors such HTML, XML, JSP that would be considered. It seem that
the J2EE engine should work seamlessly with the J2EE tools in WTP project.

You might also consider looking at the Beehive project. I would expect
that you'll want to be supported by them. Also, there may be some
functionality there that help with the J2EE reporting engine.

I would think that you'd want to talk or work with the following Apache
projects FOP and POI. As someone already mentioned, it would be good to
get the JasperReports and iText are projects on board as well.

Jeff,

Thanks for your feedback. We're glad to hear there is interest in the
project.

To speak to your first concern, we are planning to write most of the code
for the project from scratch; however, we are also considering donation of
code for components to do specific functions -- and we are certainly going
to leverage our extensive experience in the reporting area. In addition, we
intend to devote a significant number of resources to the project. As to why
the community should join the project, we feel there is real benefit to
building a reporting solution on top of the Eclipse core platform, further
extending the Eclipse ecosystem into the BI and reporting area.

Regarding your second concern, *all* of the project will be open source. We
wanted to emphasize the open XML format because we feel that it will be a
key component of a broadly accepted open source solution in this area.

Thanks for your suggestions about investigating coordination with other
projects -- we will definitely follow up on them. We also think there could
be some good synergies with the Test and Performance Tools project in terms
of providing reporting capabilities for test results, etc.

regards,

Mark
