All,

We have just posted new content in the http://www.eclipse.org/birt project
pages that detail what our goals are for the BIRT 1.0 release (targeted for
March 2005). Specifically, check out the http://www.eclipse.org/ere page and
follow the link for documents.

This is a great set of features for a 1.0 release, and we are working hard
towards that goal. As I have mentioned in other postings, you will start to
see code postings in the coming weeks.

Let us know what you think. As always -- post responses/comments/questions
on this newsgroup.

I've read the requirements and they seem to sum up exactly what I (and I
think the most people) are looking for. I was wondering about the date
though. It seems pretty ambitious. The way I calculate it, March is (minus
Thanksgiving holidays and Xmas holidays) around 10-12 weeks away. Thats
barely anytime for a project of this scope?

Chris,

Apologies for the delay in response. Thanks for your interest in the BIRT
project and taking the time to read the requirements -- and, of course, it
is great feedback that we are on target with what we need to do for 1.0.

This is a an aggressive set of features for a 1.0 release, although we
believe that for BIRT to be truly useful and widely adopted, this set of
functionality is pretty much essential. The good news is that we have been
actively in research and development mode for the code behind BIRT since
earlier in the year -- so we are not starting from scratch once we posted
the Requirements document. In fact, we have been making a lot of progress on
BIRT in the background as we have been working through getting the necessary
Eclipse infrastructure up and running. The net is that while this is an
aggressive set of features, we have been working on this for a while.

You should also note we have just made some code available in an Eclipse
BIRT CVS project repository and will be adding more code soon. This this
will provide more visibility into the code we have developed so far.

Regards,

Paul Clenahan
