Hi folk,

i read this articel above regarding e4 and RAP many month ago.

Whats the current status of that project to migrate RAP to e4? Is there a project plan or a release where RAP is running in e4? Who use it?

As I understood the blog it is possible... "Overall we are very convinced that a port of RAP to Eclipse4 is possible." But possible means not ready and implemented?

best regards
jk

You cannot use the E4 paradigm in RAP 2.1 at the moment. As far as I know the next release 2.2 due in December will not support it either.

Hi Jack,
there is no progress on e4 support in RAP. See Ralf answer here:

Best,
Ivan

Thx for your response.

so...when my goal is to migrate an E4 RCP/RAP client who share many plugin's between RAP and RCP ... whats my best alternative? (It is not single sourced...some e.g. GUI plugins are shared)

The RCP part should run in E4 in the next 7 month time frame. For the RAP things my current feeling is..that there is no plan to migrate RAP to e4 (Ralph Sternberg wrote about technical boundaries in e4 that are not multi user ready, wow...but that is an essential thing on a server).

I heard about a solution who render a RCP client with Vaadin (Vaaclipse).
http://blog.vogella.com/2013/02/15/eclipse-4-vaadin-renderer-webrenderer-for-eclipse-4-rcp-applications/

The GitHub Project:
https://github.com/semanticsoft/vaaclipse/wiki/About

???
But this is far away from an Eclipse standard?

So...what is the future of the "Multi User Web" approach of the Eclipse Client Platform from a standard point of view? How can I plan a migration project for both RAP and RCP?

best regards
jk

Hi Jack,

it sounds like the interest in Eclipse 4 suddenly increased in the last months, and that's a very good sign. In fact, we are seeing more and more requests from companies about support in RAP for Eclipse 4, but as you already found out, it is out of scope for RAP 2.2, and there are still some issues to be solved outside of the RAP project.

But the plan for RAP 2.3 (2014/Luna Release) is not yet finalized... we discussed adding this topic to our list many times in the past weeks, and didn't come to a final decision yet, but there's a tendency visible in the direction of Eclipse 4 in our team. Of course, there are problems on the road. First, if we are not pushing things like [1] forward in Eclipse 4, probably no one else will do, and there's no guarantee that we are successful. Second, so far we haven't found a real driver (e.g. a customer, or a project) for this effort that justifies to invest a lot of time into it. And third, we are a small team of RAP committers, and we need to be very careful about what we add to our road map, and what we cannot add because it would be too much... more often than not that is a very hard decision.

Are you attending EclipseCon Europe next week? If yes, we could talk about it there. If no, I will update this forum thread as soon as there are any news.

Thanks,
Markus

Hi,

thx for your answer.

Did you ever do an approximation how much effort it is to run RAP with e4?
You write that you are not sure if you are successfull? Depending to what? The e4 platform? I read a lot about e4 and the rendering possibilties...they should be easier..or to you think about that e4 is not ready for multi session usage?
(I'm not at the EclipseCon this year.)

best
regards

The uncertainty is mostly about the changes that we need upstream, i.e. in the Eclipse Platform project. Even if we try to push changes, we cannot be sure if they will be available in time with Luna.

Markus

Hi Markus,
at the end of your talk on the future of RAP at EclipseCon Europe 2013 you suggested to give you a feedback about who could be interested in this feature.
So we raise our hand: we are interested (+1)!
Thank you very much.
Cheers
Vincenzo
