The purpose of the "all in one" distributions is that they provide
a "fresh" version of everything (WTP that is, and its prereq's).

This works really well for anyone using just WTP. Once you have a fresh
installation,
you can "point" it to your old worksapce (either with -data <workspace
directory> or
I think there's some dialog that pop's up, if you prefer that method.

But, what if you have other things installed? You naturally want to "keep"
those.
It is never a good idea to try and "overlay" one zip file on top of an
existing install.
Almost never works, with Eclipse plugins.

One strategy some people use is to "keep their zips" of any and all
features they use
in some handy directory (or, sequence of directories) -- that would be
WTP, its pre-reqs,
and any other "extra" plugins they obtain elsewhere -- and then when
any one of those sets are desired to be updated, they
unzip them all again to a fresh directory. (And, naturally, then "point
to" their
old workspace, using -data, or the pop-up wizard). So, the "all in one"
would still be
useful in this case .. but you also need the zips of what ever else you
installed.

Another strategy is to use Update Manager ... should be ready soon for
1.0.2. I'll announce to this
list when it is.

If it can help, I found very very useful what described in these articles:

http://blog.exis.com/colin/archives/2004/12/23/managing-plug ins-in-eclipse/
http://www.javalobby.org/java/forums/t18678.html

I think that is what David Williams is talking about in his replay, here.

About this, I'm experimenting a strange behavior using the Update
Manager. In few words I cannot get it to work for updating any of the
Platform component, like WTP.
I started with a fresh installation of the WTP-all-in-one 1.0.1, then
when 1.0.2 was out I tried to update to the new version (following the
update instruction available in the web site), but during the download
my network connection hanged up (it stopped working even the ping
command!), then after few minutes the update Manager said there was a
network error and was unable to download some files. After closing the
dialog, the network restarted working.

Did someone find similar problems?

Thanks,

I haven't seen this, exactly, but I do know update manager is not very
robust in handling
"bad servers" or "bad connections" ... did you happen to be using a
mirror? Which ... depending
on the exact time you tried, may have had only part of the content?

Certainly you'd want to try other mirrors, or eclipe.org directly.

If you continue to repeatedly see
such problems, feel free to open a bug report with as much detail as you
can include.

But ... now that there's a 1.0.2 all-in-one .. you may just want to use
that instead?
Unless you are just experimenting or helping us test.

I made 3 tests: a local mirror (I mean, same country - Italy), another
mirror (SWITCH, which I always have found very reliable for other
things, like downloading from sourceforge) and eclipse.org directly.
Same result as I described.

I'll do my best. Could you point me at where I can find some stack
trace, error log, etc? Is it sufficient the log I get from the Error Log
view (if there's any, I didn't check)?

Yes, I did that. But it's quite frustrating having a full-featured
update system and not being able to use it.

Thank you for your interest.

Cheers,

Fabio
