After running Eclipse for years on my Mac with Leopard and Snow Leopard, I upgraded to Mountain Lion (10.8.4), installed the Java 1.7 update 13 SDK, and the latest version of Eclipse (4.3/Kepler).

I get the error message "No Java runtime present, requesting install." when running from the command line, and a "you need a Java SE 6 runtime" message when launching from the icon.

java -version from the command-line shows the correct java version; all my other java apps run fine, including NetBeans. I've tried editing the eclipse.ini file to update the -vm value and the requiredJavaVersion, but they don't seem to make any difference.

I've been at this for a few days now, and am beginning to think I'll have to live with Netbeans. Has anybody been able to overcome this problem?

(Hang on, Brian; there are one or two Macintosh-savvy guys who'll be
able to help you.)

Brian, I would have thought someone would have been with you by now.
Perhaps the Mac guys just happen to be on vacation and not processing
this forum with their usual alacrity. (One of them answered a question
in here just a couple of days ago.) As I'm not a Mac guy and you say
you've already tried what I would have suggested, I can't be of much help.

Uh, you could perhaps try an earlier version like Juno or Indigo? Maybe
there's just something to know about Kepler that wasn't a problem on the
Mac with the earlier versions?

Sorry,

Russ

Russ,

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

I have actually tried Indigo (which I was using before I upgraded to Mountain Lion), but had the same problem, which is why I went to Netbeans. I've just recently been revisiting Eclipse, after getting annoyed at some of Netbeans' quirks on my Mac, such as the "delete" key deleting two characters at a time for no comprehensible reason.

I'll be watching the forum for updates. Thanks again.

I launch with a shell script, invoking the "eclipse" executable with the -vm switch to indicate the right "java" executable--on every platform. I've not run into the error message, so I'm not sure how to resolve it.
