Linux (Fedora) Marketplace access problem [message #1064097]

I do my plugin development with Windows, but want to do some additional testing under Linux.

I installed Fedora 18 which included Juno 4.2.2. The installation details show that the Marketplace client is installed, but it is not shown in the Help menu. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it using "Install new programs", but it still is not shown.

Is this a Marketplace client bug? Or has Fedora somehow (possibly intentionally) blocked the use of the Marketplace client?

I realize I may need to install a vanilla version of Eclipse to get around this but the Eclipse site does not have any instructions on how to do that. I'm only a casual linux user, and I do not want to spend a lot of time learning about their package management and how to install programs.

Is there an alternate way to access the installed Marketplace client in the Fedora version of the Eclipse package?

Never mind. After discussing this with a knowledgeable Fedora person, I understand the situation. The eclipse plugin folders are write protected because linux distributions treat plugins as a kind of package and want to allow sysadmins to control plugin installation.

In a company controlled (i.e. lockdown) environment, the sysadmin can prevent a user from running a vanilla version of eclipse in his home directory as well.

If the user is the sysadmin, no problems, and that is what I have to do to get access to the marketplace client.

I suspect Fedora and ubuntu both just block the help menu item to avoid the problem.

I think a better approach would be to have the marketplace client ask for write access permission. That would require cooperation between the marketplace client implementation and the linux distribution providers, and probably the whole issue is pretty low on the priority list.
