Hello,

Here at Fraunhofer FOKUS we took the OMG DD meta models and created an EMF implementation based on that meta models. We are also looking into providing Java interfaces for a general mapping service between the DI and the DG part of the specification, that can be implemented for specialized DI meta models. We also want to maintain the code and update it, if a new version of the standard comes along. Maybe later a viewer for the DG part may follow, to generically visualize DG models (without any editing support). We think that other teams may take advantage of this infrastructure project (e.g. Papyrus, which implements the old DI standard, and may use this implementation as the foundation for a new version).

We would like to contribute our work to Eclipse, but we are not sure which project would be best for this contribution. We thought that GMF might be a good match for hosting the meta models, since it has a similar scope. Is there any interest in this work in the GMF team? Or would you recommend a different Project for this contribution?

Best regards,
Max

Hi,

this should be of interest for you http://wiki.eclipse.org/Development_Resources/HOWTO/Pre-Proposal_Phase . Did you take a look at the EMFT Project http://www.eclipse.org/modeling/emft/ . Maybe you fit as part of this.

Hi, we are not sure if completely new project would be a great idea for this contribution. The OMG DD meta model and maybe some services around it won't be a huge code base. A new project involves a lot of paperwork and causes a lot of overhead which is much work for such a relatively small contribution, which is also closely related to the scope of other existing projects.

I am not sure how the process works when becoming part of the EMFT project. I'll try to find out if the process of becoming part of EMFT is more lightweight than a new project proposal. As a first step, I will ask the partners we work with, if we first start an Eclipse Lab project and contribute the code to Eclipse from there. This way we can make the implementation public first and move to Eclipse when it is clear which project would be best contributing to or if a new project would make sense.

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

I think a realignment of GMF's notation model to comply with new OMG-standards is always worth a discussion.
Especially with GEF4 on the way, there could be some significant benefits in storing gef4-features as diagram graphics in specific versions of the notation model and still being able to remap/transform the model to the di-set for intertool-exchange.

Maybe a ping to gmf's mailing list would raise additional interest and/or provide advice what can be a good process resp. platform to incorporate new contributions into existing code bases or incubators.

As of personal interest and the assumption, that there are quiet some tools outside by now, that depend on existing versions of gmf notation model, a migration concept is something that should be considered from the beginning.

I am very excited about the planned work!

Regards
Thomas

It would be good if a developer would start that discussion on the gmf-dev mailing list. The question is, if there is enough interest and there are resources for a "next-gen" GMF.
