Please, help

I am trying to install a new plugin (for Scala).

The main problem is that I can not launch the
installation procedure. I click on the above menu
item, but nothing happens.

My Eclipse version is Classic 4.2.1, 32-bit for Windows.
Platform: Windows 7.
JVM: jre 1.6

Other than failure to launch installation of plugin, my
Eclipse installation seems fully functional. I do routinely
edit/compile/run Java projects.

From other forums I vaguely understood that there might
be a chance that a plugin will automatically install if
I configure either installation site or download the
program folders with the plugin and then restart Eclipse.

I tried that through "Preferences > Install/Update >
Available Software Sites". Therein, I added the update
site.
Besides that, I downloaded the plugin zip file and
unpacked it into the eclipse/dropins folder.
But none of that worked. Nothing changed after the
restart. At least, I was expecting to see the new Scala
perspective in the list of available perspectives. It
wasn't added to the list.

So, my questions are:
1) How can I make "Help > Install New Software" work?
2) Is there any roundabout to install the plugin?
3) How do I verify that a plugin has been installed?

Thank you for your time,
Regards,
Leo

Hi,

In order to install an Eclipse plugin, you have three options:
- put your plugins in the dropins folder (don't do that, it's horrible)
- install your plugins with the update site and the "Install New Software" menu.
- use the Eclipse Marketplace

If you want to install a plugins thanks to its update site. Use the "Help -> Install New Software" menu, it will open a dialog where you can add a new update site (use the "add" button). Once you have added the update site, select it and its content will appear. For example, in the following screenshot, you can see the plugins available in the Acceleo update site.
http://eclipse.org/acceleo/images/install_2_releases.png

Select the plugins you want to install, and then click next. You will have to accept the end user agreement/license and then click next or finish to install your plugins. Eclipse will ask you if you want to restart, do it and after that you are ready to go!

If you have the Eclipse marketplace installed (I don't remember if it comes with the Eclipse Classic package), you can use the "Help -> Eclipse Marketplace" menu to open it. Once open, you just have to search for the plugin you want to install and then click install and follow the instructions.

Stephane,

first off, truly appreciate your coming to rescue.
I was about to part with the hope.

Your reply is thoroughly instructive.

The problem was that I couldn't pass the very 1-st step:

'Use the "Help -> Install New Software" menu, it will open
a dialog where you can add a new update site'

I did click on this menu item, but nothing would happen.
No dialog would open up.

Fortunately, the issue has been resolved in the latest
Juno version 4.2.2.
This leaves me to assume that my starting version
4.2.1 had a bug. I did everything exactly same with both
versions. But 4.2.1 didn't work, while 4.4.2 opens the
Install Manager just fine.

Now I was able to complete all the steps, just as
you explained so clearly.

The Scala-IDE did not succeed to get properly
installed, though (ErrMsg: "Cannot complete the install
because one or more required items could not be found.
Software being installed: Scala IDE for dev support
2.0.2.v-2_09201207120929-81d0972").

But this, I guess, is a new story. The ball is
more likely on the Scala's side, not a fault of Eclipse
anymore.

Thank you, once again.
With kind regards,
Leo

Hi, I just had this problem in juno where the "install new software" would not launch i would just click it and it would not do anything no errors etc. So I closed and launched it as administrator. The problem went away and another problem went away it launches faster it use to take over a minute to start up. Now it takes ~<30 secs. So i will always be launching this as admin. I'm running on Server 08 R2 btw.
