Hi,

There is a bug report: Bug 328982 - Cannot open report exported to .ppt in microsoft powerpoint 2010.

It has been marked as "won't fix". Microsoft changed the output format, however with more and more customers upgrading their office products, it seems like a major limitation if it is not to eventually support it. I would like to understand if there is a plan to eventually support this. If there is, what roadmap do you have in mind?

Taking a look into it. On the bug, it says a target milestone of 4.2.2, which is set to release this month. But, as you said, it's set to won't fix, so something seems to be conflicting there. I'll let you know what I find out.

It appears there's a newer bug, for this. It doesn't have a target version listed. Please vote for it: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=349492

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your reply. I looked at the bug report and am the person who created it. Is it possible to know if this will be supported, since it is becoming pretty urgent for me.

Neil

Oh. Sorry. I should have looked at that. Smile I really hope it's something that is supported, soon. I don't see why it would not be. Let me see what I can find out. If I hear anything, I'll post back in here.

Hi Michael,

Any update? My client has been asking the same question again and again; however, I can't tell them if this will be supported.

I found this link and it looks like there is a way to specify the version of the ppt: http://www.birt-exchange.com/be/documentation/ihub2/aic/help/brs/birt-reports/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm#href=Exporting-IV.06.16.html&single=true

I'm using BIRT 4.2.2 and this is what I saw when I opened the viewer (Please refer to the screen shot in attachment). I didn't see the option to specify the version. Please advise.

regards,

Neil

That page you linked to is for the commercial line of BIRT. The PMC is currently in the process of getting a pptx emitter into the open-source product. Hopefully it'll make it into the next version. The project plan for the next release should come out soon. We should know if it made the cut then.

Hi Michael,
you have an idea of when it might leave version 4.3?
Thanks

I'm hoping that the plan is released soon. I don't believe the 4.3 version is slated to come out until June or so, anyways, so there would still be some waiting. The plan should tell us more when it's released.

Ok i will wait. But I have a doubt, I'll explain: after opening the ppt file exported with version 4.2.2. I noticed that this file is text as you can see from here:
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: multipart/related; boundary="___Actuate_Content_Boundary___"

If I open it with PowerPoint 2007 and save it, the file becomes binary (and also opens the PowerPoint2010).
My big problem is: as i should concatenate these files together with the POI, and the ppt generated by birt 4.2.2. can not be open with POI becouse has invalid header (becouse isn't a really ppt file), my question is: with the new version of Birt, the file generated is in the same format (so can not be treated by POI) or is in the correct format with correct header of a normal pptx file?
Thanks

Here is a link to the project plan:

BIRT 4.3 Project Plan

It shows that 4.3 will have the new emitters for PPT and DOC that will work with Office 2010. There will also be an updated XLS/XLSX output.

Yes, this should be resolved in 4.3. Have you tried downloading the latest 4.3 build to test?

I see in this page http://wiki.eclipse.org/BIRT_Project_Plan that the 4.3 version will be available on 26/06/2013, so i wait this date to download and test.
I will give a feedback.
Thanks.

Yes, but if you look at this page, you'll find the latest milestone build for 4.3 that you can download and test on to be sure it will work.

http://download.eclipse.org/birt/downloads/build_list.php

Hope this helps.
