Are any VE committers monitoring this newsgroup? Is there any chance
that a version of VE that actually works with the Galileo versions of
WTP and EMF can be produced? Are there hard upper bounds on versions
that are really necessary?

yesterday I installed it in Galileo, using the VE update site... I had
to select only VE packages (the other 3 didn't work), and it installed...

Is there a solution to this problem yet? I still seem to get the same problem as has been reported here when working with Galileo and VE1.4.0.

I have tested. It works. Please make sure you are not using a Firewall or
protected by a Network Firewall.

This problem is the subject of Bugzilla report #290037. Everything works fine if you install into a base Eclipse version. However, if you choose to install into any package containing the Web Tools version of JEM/EMF, you will get the referenced error. I currently have 2 Eclipse installs to work-around the problem. The first is a base Eclipse package with VE 1.4.0 installed which I use for thick client development. The second is a J2EE Eclipse Package without VE installed. This work-around means separating my codebase into 2 different workspaces. I'd like to see this problem resolved soon so that I can return to a single install and workspace.

I have recently tried installing into three different Eclipse download versions (in Linux, annotated below), and neither the .zip archive nor the web site's packages even show up. I tried all three within the last two days.

I tried totally purging all references to eclipse including those hidden in my home directory.

Still can't get VE installed for some reason. I've tried:
Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers (189 MB)
Eclipse IDE for Java Developers (92 MB)
and, last night:
Eclipse Classic 3.5.1 (162 MB)

I don't know what else to try. I'm using Linux Mint 8 (a Ubuntu Karmic derivative).

You need just select one option VE SDK. If it still donest' work, make sure
there isn't a firewall.

No, there is no firewall set, and I used even the .zip file and it doesn't even READ anything to LET me select the VE. That's why I tried to clean everything.

I've been struggling with this for a day or so and think I've come across the solution. It's file permissions. I noticed that VE installed correctly (after choosing only the VE/VE-SDK options) on my Windows XP machine but not on my Windows 7 machine. The Windows 7 machine produced all kinds of dependencies not met errors. I noticed that the Windows 7 installation was missing all the update sites that the XP installation had. I manually put them in and VE loaded but VE didn't appear anywhere. At first I was puzzled because the Update manager said it was installed but the Help files and the VE views were not there. I check against the XP machine and I discovered that all the plugin/feature files were missing on my Windows 7 machine.

Next I reinstalled eclipse in my User area and everything worked. I also reinstalled eclipse in C:\ and ran it as "administrator" and everything also worked. I'm not a Vista/Windows 7 expert so I'm not sure what's the best solution for this, but if eclipse can't write files in its area, then VE won't install correctly. I hope this helps.
