Greetings,

I have updated the downloads page prototype
(http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/index2.php), according to the feedback
I have received. I would like to thank everyone who took the time to
try the new downloads page and comment on it, it was a great help.

Here are the tidbits of feedback that have been the focus of our recent
revisions:

You said
- SDK links on the right aren't prominent enough.
- To me the stuff on the right-hand side should be more prominent
- use the http headers to guess what platform
- no mention of Java IDE

I say:
- The http headers are now parsed, and an "Eclipse 3.0.1" download link
for the detected operating system appear prominently on the revised
prototype. This improvement is my favorite.

- I have added a mention of the Eclipse as an IDE, but I don't mention
Java because Eclipse is an extensible IDE, not just for Java.

============================================================ =============

You said:
- I'd like a guided approach, step-by-step
- one potato, two potato

I say:
- As Mike Milinkovich explained in a previous post, this would involve
creating components that don't yet exist. Maybe a future revision could
contain this functionality.

============================================================ =============

You said:
- the mirrors page is too long.

I say:
- I have shortened the mirrors page by as much as 60% by grouping
mirrors by continent, making it really easy to find a local mirror. It
also makes more sense to do so, as countries in a continent often share
the same Internet backbones.

============================================================ =============

You said:
- Update site references

I say:
- I have added a reference to the Update Manager in the "Related Links"
section.

Thanks again for all your feedback. If all goes well, we should be
replacing the current downloads page with the new prototype shortly.

Nice idea, but I'm using MacOS X and it offers me a download for
Windows. Something is not quite right.

Roy,

one thing which I still don't like is to have two columns one on the
left and one on the right. Did you prototype to include the top 10 list
in the left column?

I have few comments.

1. It is not clear where does the quick link belong. You suggest the
user to download "Eclipse 3.0.1", but such
term is never used in the detailed downloads (you call it "platform").
This may confuse the user.

Regarding not mentioning Java - you do mention a C++ IDE as a separate
project, and the new user may not understand where the Java IDE is.
Maybe it can be good to describe in parenthesis what the platform/SDK is
(SDK term is used in other places).

Also the distinction between the platform, other components and SDK is
not clear

Thanks for your feedback.

For 1. I agree that it could cause confusion. I will add the "Platform"
label to the main Eclipse 3.0.1 download.

For 2. I disagree. This is a downloads page, not an "about" page. If
one wants to download Eclipse but has no idea what it is, I feel they
should read up a bit on the various project and about pages before
attempting to download.

On the main eclipse.org page, the first sentence is as follows:
"Eclipse is a kind of universal tool platform - an open extensible IDE
for anything and nothing in particular." Perhaps java should be
mentioned there? There's an open bug on this subject, but that's beside
the issue of presenting a new downloads interface:

Regarding (2) - it depends on when/how the user arrives to that page.
If he arrives from an internal link or have browsed the website for a
while, I agree with you.
However, if people link to that page from the outside, it may cause
confusion.

I guess the best idea would be to wait for some real feedback after the
page becomes the default.

Maybe there can be measures for all that. For example, if a (new) user
(identified by cookie) arrives at
the website and downloads (for example) the binary RCP package, he must
have mistaken (since such download is unlikely for a new user. also you
can check if he downloads anything else later). I don't think this issue
should be top priority, but it can be fun to research it.

Roy,

This new download page is nice.
I have only one problem with it : to download Eclipse SDK, you have to select the download link that followed 'Platform' term.
'Platform' is one component of 'The Eclipse Project' (for instance Platform does not contains the Java IDE).
The link to download Eclipse should be the one just under 'Eclipse project', not the one after platform.

The problem is that in the download page you try to follow this structure :
"Main project
Download | Project home
Sub Project : download | home page.
"

This is ok for 'Eclipse Tools Project' but it does not really fit with 'The Eclipse Project'.
Few people are interested to download only Platform (or only JDT or only PDE)

The smallest modification I suggest is to remove 'Platform' line.
It will look like this :
-----
Eclipse Project
Download | Project home

A sentence to tell that this where people will find Eclipse SDK, RCP SDK ...
---------
(Download link will logically go to 'Eclipse project downloads' page).

I know you've gotten a bunch of comments already on the confusion between IDE vs. SDK vs. Platform, so I'll be brief.

The second sentence says "If you're new to Eclipse, start by downloading the Eclipse IDE." However, the term "Eclipse IDE" doesn't seem to appear anywhere else on the page, leaving the really new user lost. I think this can be fixed by changing the large "Download Now" in that section to "Download the Eclipse IDE Now," or something similar.

I fixed the detection script, so it should offer you a Mac OS X build.

Feedback that arrived in my Inbox.

Ignaz wrote:

"Make it easier to download Eclipse, especially for newcomers"
It's a lot better now. Newcomers may still be uncertain of what packages
they additionally need (most probably they won't need any, but how
should they know?).
One sidenote: The scipt didn't detect I was using a 64-Bit Linux
version, but offered the 32-Bit version as the default download instead.

II'll have to add AMD-64 and IA-64 to the detection. Thanks
for bringing it up. Oddly enough I run Linux on AMD-64 at home and it
never occured to me to test this. [/WebMaster]

"Make it easier to find files on eclipse.org"
Partially better. I still can't find the language pack, although I know
it exists...

"Make it easier to find a mirror to download files"
Perfect!

"Make it easier to find downloads for other projects"
Seems to be very easy, though I haven't tested it yet.
