Typically, Everything you need to delete is contained in the
subdirectory that also contains the eclipse executable, which is a file
named simply, eclipse. I tried using the Zend debugger some years ago
and have forgotten what it consists of, so I can't tell you about that.
I assume it's plug-ins under this same subdirectory; I don't remember
whether there was Eclipse-specific stuff mixed in with PHP files.
To rid yourself of what's in Applications -> Programming, look on the
path /usr/share/applications. There's probably a file named
eclipse.desktop. Just delete it.
When you install Eclipse, you do NOT want to go to any distro's package
manager, Synaptic or otherwise. Instead, go to eclipse.org, download and
explode the tarball where you want it (I suggest a private subdirectory
somewhere under /home/user). What's included in distros is always old,
often broken. Just say no unless you're on a weird OS (not Ubuntu's case).
Last, just a word on Ubuntu. I love Lucid (10.4), but support for it
runs out next April. You should at least contemplate whether you're
going to update to Precise (12.04), the next LTS release (supported
until April 2017, I think). I'm beginning to use Precise (one host so
far) that though I have a couple of Lucid and one Maverick installation
still. And I hate Unity. But, the time has come. If you're revamping
software on your box now, maybe it's time to rethink where you're going.
