I want to uninstall an old version of Eclipse (Indigo) on Ubuntu 10.04 to install the latest. The old version was installed manually, with Zend debugger, and I just want a clean install.

I see plenty of information about how to uninstall if synaptic was used (which it wasn't), but little about manual uninstalls. Do I just need to find all the files? This install has created an icon in Applications|Programming. Will this get cleaned up with a new install?

Thanks

Typically, Everything you need to delete is contained in the
subdirectory that also contains the eclipse executable, which is a file
named simply, eclipse. I tried using the Zend debugger some years ago
and have forgotten what it consists of, so I can't tell you about that.
I assume it's plug-ins under this same subdirectory; I don't remember
whether there was Eclipse-specific stuff mixed in with PHP files.

To rid yourself of what's in Applications -> Programming, look on the
path /usr/share/applications. There's probably a file named
eclipse.desktop. Just delete it.

When you install Eclipse, you do NOT want to go to any distro's package
manager, Synaptic or otherwise. Instead, go to eclipse.org, download and
explode the tarball where you want it (I suggest a private subdirectory
somewhere under /home/user). What's included in distros is always old,
often broken. Just say no unless you're on a weird OS (not Ubuntu's case).

Last, just a word on Ubuntu. I love Lucid (10.4), but support for it
runs out next April. You should at least contemplate whether you're
going to update to Precise (12.04), the next LTS release (supported
until April 2017, I think). I'm beginning to use Precise (one host so
far) that though I have a couple of Lucid and one Maverick installation
still. And I hate Unity. But, the time has come. If you're revamping
software on your box now, maybe it's time to rethink where you're going.
I'm just saying this, of course.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the thoughtful response Russell. I found the directory under /opt. I saved the old version by renaming (I'm always a packrat), and then installed the version I wanted. I think this worked fine without deleting any of the other vestiges because a) I was starting another version right away, and b) Eclipse seems to be smart enough to know that it is being started for the first time. My existing workspace was retained, which is great. I tried half-heartedly to use the directory /opt/eclipse to link to the specific version, but I'm not sure if this would have worked even if I was better with Linux links.

Thanks also for the nudge on upgrading to Precise. That's something I want to do, but I've been delaying for months. I have always felt it safer to do a new install and transfer the important things from the old version, but that's a little more complex than an update in situ. Right now, I'm trying to get Eclipse working so I can run CakePHP and a JavaScript library. But you have made me think harder about the switch to Precise too.
