Okay, sorry for such a trivial question, but I couldn't come up with any search terms that gave me anything close to what I'm looking for.

I've been using Indigo for maybe a year now, and at first when Eclipse started up, the explorer window started in the workspace directory. Now, I've somehow hit some button, and now the Eclipse explorer always starts in a particular project, even after I've closed it. Is there anyway to set a different "default project", or just to have it just open up in the workspace directory like it used to?

Sounds like you might have selected Go Into from the context menu. This
focuses the workspace on the selected item. There should be an icon in
the tool bar for the Project Explorer window that looks like a folder
with a blue arrow pointing up. If you hover over it it should say Up to
Workspace. Click the icon to get back to the workspace.

Hello David,

Thanks for the reply. That's what I've been doing to get back to the workspace view. My problem is that I have to do this everytime I start Eclipse. Instead of starting at my workspace like it used to, I'm now always in the project. Indeed, that project name is now always in my title bar, even when I've since closed it. I'm wondering if there is a way to return to the workspace or specify a different project to start in so I don't need to use the up button every time.

Try Window->Reset Perspective. This puts the perspective back to what
it was originally. I think this might reset the Project Explorer back
as well.

Afraid that still didn't fix the "issue". Also I should mention this occurs regardless of whether I'm in the Java or PHP perspective, so it doesn't appear to have anything to do with those settings either.

See Eclipse PDT | PHP-Explorer remains in Project Focus (go into) after restart - Stack Overflow (it is my answer)

(this can be reproduced with Indigo(Eclipse 3.7.2).
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create new workspace and a Java Project
2. Right-click the project and select 'Open in New Window'
3. Close the main window, and then close the new window
4. Start eclipse)

Juno(Eclipse 4.2.1) has no such problem.

Thanks, that did the trick! For others who have this problem, just have to make sure you edit that file while Eclipse isn't running otherwise it will undo that change.
