I am using an ATMEGA644P connected to my PC using a USB cable and the usbasp programmer command when I download in a CMD window. I tried adding this programmer config to eclipse but when I press the 'add' button in the AVRDude preferences pane, nothing happens... :/ any help would be much appreciated!

AVRDude appears to be a third party plugin that runs on Eclipse. Your best bet is probably to check the support options for the plugin at the plugins web site. The people in the Eclipse forums aren't likely to know much if anything about this plugin.
