eclipse plugin: help getOffset in Position [message #987806]

Hello,
I am new to Eclipse plugin development and need some help to undestand about the Offset. I went through the class Position and it says " The text range is specified by an offset and a length." what does this offset refer to, the byte offset of that line. How can I relate a line number to this offset.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
