I would suggest...

Choose between Eclipse and NetBeans. NetBeans seemed simpler to me 5
years ago, the last time I looked at it. I say this in all honesty,
however, actual large-scale and commercial applications are developed
using Eclipse and not NetBeans (so much).

Assuming you choose Eclipse, ...

1. Just about any version starting with Galileo is fine, but I'd suggest
at least a version as recent as Helios.
2. Use http://www.vogella.com/eclipseide.html for its first three tutorials.
3. Read Head First Java from O'Reilly and do the example in one or more
Eclipse projects.
4. Come back here when you get stuck on Eclipse issues.
5. Go to javaranch.com or stackoverflow.com when you get stuck on Java
questions.

For help installing Eclipse, I suggest this forum. I also suggest the
first two steps in the following summary:

http://www.javahotchocolate.com/tutorials/eclipse-summary.html

You're in good hands here.

Best of luck to you.

Russ

I think that the eclipse and java for total beginners (I know, a mouthful) is the best out of those. It's a download of 16, 10(ish) minute long videos, the first of which you can watch online. You do however need flash player, but one more download is worth it. When you're ready to move on from that, add to this post and i'll try to get you more tutorials. Very Happy

Ok, I just gained the ability to post links, here you go! http://eclipsetutorial.sourceforge.net/totalbeginner.html

Some things are left out of the video, so make sure to use the companion document, a list of valuable terms and definitions is toward the back of the document. Smile

No, this isn't so good. It's based on Europa (2007). Many tutorials
elsewhere use modern Eclipse, in particular, the ones from vogella.de.
