The real measurement of Eclipse is that simply the vast majority of Java
applications are written using Eclipse as the integrated development
environment (IDE). There are alternatives, one or two very good, but
serious, professional developers use Eclipse for Java.
There are huge communities of Eclipse users for other languages as well,
in particular, C/C++, PHP and JavaScript.
