Another case of VE not showing up after installation [message #133759] Fri, 01 December 2006 15:48 Go to next message

I'm having the same problem that several others have had with VE not being
visible in Eclipse in 3.2. I'm running on XP Pro SP2. I've tried updating
all my features but it hasn't helped. The error log does not show any
errors from Eclipse startup. Although I'm currently interested in getting
VE to work, in general, how does one debug installation problems like this?

I'm attaching a jpg screenshot of my product configuration dialog.

What do you mean by not showing up?

If you clicked on a java file and did popup menu->Open With-> Does the
Visual Editor show up in that list?

No, it does not show up in the context menu. That's what I meant by not
being visible Also, I am not given the option of creating a new visual
class from the File->New menu. Sorry for the lack of specificity. The only
place I see any evidence of the visual editor is in help. So at least the
help for ve got installed properly. I tried creating a new java project
just in case there was something weird about the configuration of my
existing projects, but that didn't help, either. There was still no option
to create a new visual class.

Some progress. I installed callisto and visual editor is now showing up on
the context menu for existing java files and I can create a new visual
class. But if I try to open a file in ve I get 2 errors and no editor
appears, although a tab for the file that says "Visual Editor" is created.
Clicking on the tab generates 2 more similar errors.

From the error log:

This says you don't have the correct version of GEF.

When you used Callisto, did you hit the "Include Required Features"
button too?

VE requires GEF and EMF also.

Hi there,
did you try to start eclipse with the "-clean" option?
It es someimes needed to reinit plugins.

"Cleans cached data used by the OSGi framework and Eclipse runtime. Try
to run Eclipse once with this option if you observe startup errors after
install, update, or using a shared configuration. "

I think the problems were:

1) Find updates for installed features was not finding graphical editing
framework 3.2.1.v20060921. The callisto update does include this version.
2) After doing the callisto install, I had to run eclipse -clean to get it
to work.

So I tried reverting my configuration to the pre-callisto state, uninstalled
the now disabled gef 3.2.1, and updated from callisto again, this time just
picking gef 3.2.1 to install. I then ran eclipse -clean for good luck, and
ve is now working.

Thanks for your help.

Don't do -clean if you can help it. This is only for when updating
during development OUTSIDE of the update manager. If you use the update
manager do not do -clean.

Cheers Dirk

Thanks! Restarting with -clean did the trick.
