I am developing an engineering work process based upon an international
standard. The standard is one PDF document with 100 pages and 300 'shall'
statements. I am looking for details in how to manage this. I have spent
the last two years reading about SE methods and tools. I am now ready to
start practicing.

I have written many engineering work processes but I have never taken this
approach. I am particularly interested in the ability to trace functional
activities back to requirements - assuring that everything is being
addressed and nothing is left out. And the obvious long term ability to
modify the process when future revisions to the standard are published.

I would appreciate all comments.

Thanks,
Ray

Hi Ray,

One typical approach for importing a large document (specification,
standard, requirements, process, etc.) into OSEE is to make each paragraph
a separate artifact. One option to do this automatically is to import an
existing Word 2003 XML document. The Word styles "Heading (1...9)" are
used to determine the breakout into individual artifacts and their
position in the document hierarchy.

It is also typical to create a functional decomposition using "Component"
artifacts in the artifact explorer. Then to allocation (through the
allocation relation) the requirements to the components.

Then BLAM can be used to generate the traceability reports needed to look
for holes in the allocation.

Ryan

Ryan,

That sounds straight forward. I'll give it a try.

Thank you,
Ray
