Hello,

I am trying to install eclipse for multiple software platform development on a windows 7 x64 os. I use a number of programming languages but for this post lets say I want to set up eclipse to do java, c/c++, and python development.

Well right from the very start of the process I am totally befuddled!

First I do not see a base eclipse 4.2 juno installation! I only see packages like java dev, c/c++ dev, etc. There is on python in the downloads setion but I can get a plugin from pydev.org.

So I downloaded the java dev package, and the c/c++ package, and the python plugin but now I am stumped as to how I proceed?

Both the java and c/c++ package unzip to a eclipse folder. If I unzip them on top of each other and launch eclipse I see a welcome screen for either c/c++ OR jave development so how do I select one or the other?

The installation guide is in a word HORRIBLE! It implies there is a simple base juno installation then use help install new features to add packages like c/c++, java, python, etc. Which would make life a whole lot less confusing then the current situation!

I mean right from the start the instructions say install eclipse 4.2 (juno) from the download page and then sends you to a page where you can only download pre-setup packages!

Am I supposed to have a stand-alone eclipse folder for each "package"?

If so then how to I add a python development env?

Am I supposed to install one "package" like java dev, and then use the help add new software to add c/c++ and python? But then every time I start eclipse I get a welcome screen for one of the two packages and I don't see how I switch from java to c/c++ or to python???

Can you see where this is frustrating and maddening?

This is so needlessly confusing can someone please for the love of god explain the proper way to set up a c/c++, java, python development env?

You don't need multiple Eclipses. I personally prefer not to mix my
Eclipse with ADT (Android) stuff with Eclipse JEE, but I could do it
that way. Many prefer to do the way you're trying to do, so, you're in
good company.

The larger the Eclipse package you start out with, the less you'll have
to install. So start with the package that most resembles the biggest
project you'd like to do (probably C/C++ in your case).

Then add the rest of the stuff to it via Help -> Install New Software.

Yes, I can sort of see how this is confusing. There are many who will
answer in this forum if you get stuck installing other software, but
remember that there are birds of a feather, i.e.: you'll get more and
better help with the C/C++ stuff by asking in the Eclipse CDT forum.

Best of luck.
