I am a total newbie to programing and am using Eclipse 4.2 on Ubuntu 12.04. Eclipse runs and compiles fine but when I go to run the program, I get the "use device" dialog and am forced to use the AVD as the program doesn't seem to detect the real devices specifics. I get a bunch of question marks and such. The device I want to use is a ZTE Score X500 which is running on the android 2.3.4 platform. Is there a way to make Eclipse detect my device and if so how?

debug mode is set on the phone.

tried cycling the debug option both while connected AND disconnected to the computer.

OS detects the sdcard as a new drive and the media player wants to open the files.

can't seem to invoke adb commands in X no matter which directory I'm in. (current file location is /Documents/android-sdks/platform-tools/).
