Dear M2E Team,

As Eclipse Committer I was recently notified about your project creation.
While at first it seems a little weird having 2 project proposals
(including IAM) with almost identical scope (Eclipse and Maven), other
areas such as SVN Team Client show, this can be the case and not only lead
to confusion, but also may produce some competition fruitful to the
community.

Since your project was not only recommended to me by the Eclipse Board,
but consists of a larger selection of different representatives, plus you
already got 2 Mentors, so you have some advantages over the other proposal.

Having both contributed to your Codehaus project in the past (using JIRA)
and spread the word about Maven and Eclipse for several years, including
the 1st EclipseWorld where I drew attention of key WTP members to it, I
would be happy to join your project team and contribute if you are open to
help?

I am also committing member of Eclipse Babel which may help dealing with
the localization of m2e and also have committed other UI elements of
earlier plugins, such as Sysdeo Tomcat Launcher for Eclipse (one of the
first plugins ever and certainly the first working one for Java EE/Apache
Servers)

Last but not leasts I am invited to speak about Eclipse, Mylyn and Maven
("EMMA" if you like nice acronyms) next month and would be happy to spread
the word about e2m there, too.

Kind Regards,
Werner Keil

Thanks Werner. Any contribution would be a huge help for the project.
If you are willing to commit to relatively big component please contact
me directly (especially if you already have component you like to work
on in mind).

But if you or others want to start solver and get more familiar with
m2eclipse internals, here is list of JIRA issues that should be more or
less isolated and easy enough to contribute:

MNGECLIPSE-555: use M2_REPO variable in sourcepath set by "download
sources" action
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MNGECLIPSE-555

MNGECLIPSE-541: Versions sorted incorrectly in Add Dependency dialog
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MNGECLIPSE-541

MNGECLIPSE-539: Make debugging of external maven JVM optional
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MNGECLIPSE-539

MNGECLIPSE-548: Workspace is not activated when breakpoint is hit
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MNGECLIPSE-548

So, please don't hesitate to comment on the bug reports if you want to
work on any of those. I can provide Mylyn contexts and initial pointers
to help you get started.

regards,
Eugene

I would like to make a couple of comments to avoid confusion.

As you might know, I'm one of the initial committers for the IAM proposal,
and I can tell that IAM also has 2 mentors (3, in fact). This has been
recently announced (http://tinyurl.com/6bcmgt)

Regarding diversity on the representatives, you can judge by each project
history (stats in Ohloh: http://tinyurl.com/4g2nlu). IAM is backed by a
number of committers volunteering from the community... information is
available on the IAM newsgroup.

That said, I'm not trying to discourage you (or anyone else) from
contributing to m2e. There is a need for a maven-eclipse integration and
every hand is welcome (be it on IAM or M2E).

Just to clarify, given m2eclipse history and how many times it been
moved from one SVN repository to another, any stats Ohloh would show you
simply not representative.

Eugene,
Thanks a Lot for the feedback.

I am currently on a conference trip through Central Europe and going to
speak in Bangelore, too.
I heard from your WTP committer, Raghu, that he's in India again, too.
I've been in touch with him over Babel before, too.
should we manage to meet there I'd be very happy to discuss possible
contributions or help in his areas, as well as chances to make proper use
of Babel (he has a couple of components and experience in i18n, too)
My access to full line is currently limited, so right now Bugzilla, JIRA
or Eclipse Committer access should be enough, but when I get back online
or for the event in India the Mylyn access would be great.

Kind Regards,
Werner

A bit strange, Google has not signalled support for either of those btw
(being active at least using Eclipse technology a lot and they host IAM's
legacy code now), but at least M2E has support from other Open Social
Alliance members ( like LinkedIn) and other Web 2.0 giants like EBay.

Beside Apache, where 2, 3 or more competing projects for the same problem
(all those OpenFaces or their competitors like Struts, Shale, Tapestry,
Wicket, etc. not to mention this new Ruby Build competing with Maven, Ant
or Ivy, too ;-) have a long tradition IONA is also interested in both
projects.

Eclipse Babel certainly offers help for both, too!
And unless project specific proprietory strings are required by either the
idea behind Babel to share and Reuse messages across the Eclipse ecosystem
benefits both by allowing them to at least use each other's message
resources and therefore largely safe i18n efforts.

I spoke to representatives of Eclipse leadership during EFE and they also
have no problems with 2 projects. Ultimately over time they say a merge
would be beneficial to the community, but it, not some chair or "big boss"
shall end up deciding this.

Hi Werner,

I'm cross posting your offering to the IAM newsgroup.

Since we already have externalized much of our messages, it would be
great if you could brief us how to proceed from there.

Hi Werner,
This is of interest for Buckminster too. Our process of externalizing
messages has not started yet though, so we cannot contribute much at
this point but when we do the idea of sharing seems very appealing. So I
chime in with Abel, a brief would be appreciated.

Thomas Hallgren
