RAD and BIRT [message #120253] Mon, 30 January 2006 20:07 Go to next message

I have been attempting to use BIRT for a few days with RAD. It seems the
report design perspective works correctly, but when I click on the preview
tab, it just hangs indefinitely. Has anyone has any success with RAD and
BIRT? I am using BIRT version 2 and RAD 6.0.1.1 which is built from
Eclipse 3.0.2.

RAD is IBM's version of Eclipse. My report is small - only a few rows, but
it behaves the same way that yours does - just keeps eating up memory when I
try to preview. I can bring up my report on a stand-alone tomcat server
with birt deployed. I would like to get the preview function working
though.

Installing BIRT with RAD should work if you do the following

1 - Download the BIRT Framework and extract to folder (e.g. c:/birt2.0)

2 - Download additional required files (iText, Axis and prototype.js) See
Birt Install page
http://www.eclipse.org/birt/phoenix/build/
Apply addition files to the directory you extracted BIRT to.

3. Navigated to the IBM Rational Links folder,
(e.g. C:\Program Files\IBM\Rational\SDP\6.0\eclipse\links)

4. Created a new link file in this directory named org.eclipse.birt.link

5. In this link file, enteredthe path to the location of BIRT 2.0, e.g.
path=c:/birt2.0

The Eclipse SDK, EMF and GEF are not needed. They should already exist.

This still did not work. When I try to preview, it eats up all my CPU and
runs forever. This is just a small report that runs in 20 second or so in
Birt 1.0.

Does the same thing happen when previewing with the Web Viewer?

Yes it does. It behaves like this if I click the preview tab or go to
file--> preview. If I run the Web Viewer on a Tomcat server I am able to
view the reports, but when I try to preview it runs forever. I believe the
preview uses the embedded Tomcat server like the help does. My help works
though.

I tried to switch the preview function to use the Tomcat server I have
running in RAD, but when I would try to preview, it would change ip address.

Funny thing is, the preview works fine with 1-0-1.

Dan,

Any chance you could download Eclipse, EMF and GEF do an install with those.
create the link in the links directory and fire up a copy to see if it
works?
You shouldnt have to reinstall BIRT. This would only be for a test. If
that works than
we can look at what conflict we are having.

Thanks

Jason

Previously, on my second machine, I installed Eclipse 3.0.2, which is the
same version of Eclipse that RAD is built off of. I then installed Birt 2.0
and all the prerequisites. The preview functionality worked fine.

Today or tomorrow, I will do as you suggested on the machine with RAD and
report back.

It didn't take as long as I thought. On my RAD machine I installed Eclipse
3.0.2 along with EMF and GEF. I linked it to the same Birt 2 directory as
my RAD environment. I then copied over a report, and it previewed fine.

Any ideas?

Are you getting any conflict statements in the RAD logs?

Dan,

I dont remember where the log file is generated in RAD, but on load it
creates a log file showing any problems.
When you preview there should be a log in the workspace that shows any
errors.

Jason,
I am trying to create a link from RAD to BIRT(both versions 1.0 and 2.0)
with BIRT 2.0
*************
I installed RAD 6.0 and create da link to BIRT 2.0, created a
project,datasource,dataset...>
then i try to preview the result in Dataset mode, i got JVM failure error,
JVM terminated Exit code=-1073741819
with BIRT 1.0
**************
I changed the link file path to BIRT 1.0 created dataset --> able to
preview the result in dataset mode.
Then i dragged a table from the palette and from the DataExplore view
mapped the fields from the table, and now try to preview the result.
I got the following error

HTTP Status 500 -

------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------

type Exception report

message

description The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it
from fulfilling this request.
Any clue..
Thanks.

In your workspace under .metadata. Just do a search for *.log and you will
see the catalina logs.

Is this all that was in the log file when previewing the report?
I dont see anything obvious. I checked which version we tried this on and
it was Birt 2.0 and RAD 6.0.

That is all that is in the log. I am using RAD 6.0.1.1. I might try
rolling back to 6.0 to see if that makes a difference.

The problem seems to be with IBM Rational Application Developer Fix Pack
6.0.1.1. I rolled it back and now I am able to preview with Birt 2.0.
