Hello,
I just downloaded the 3.8 targz. I unzipped it, launched, immediately went to Help | Install New Software. For "Work with" I selected "The Eclipse Project Updates - http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/3.8".
I am presented with a list of items with checkboxes. I really have no idea what any of them mean as they all use acronyms I never heard of. Which, if any, should I install? Please see attached.
The ones I find particularly confusing are:
"Eclipse Platform" -- What is an "eclipse platform" and don't I have it already?
"Eclipse Platform SDK" -- same question
"Eclipse SDK" -- same question
Thank you for your help. And if you can "teach me to fish" by referring me to a documentation site, please do, I'd be happy to read more about these platforms and sdks.

PS: My ultimate goal is to write c++ code with eclipse which will require me to install something called the CDT.

Save yourself some trouble. Download Eclipse IDE for C/C++ Developers as
a place to start. Then, check out the Eclipse CDT forum for help (per
sticky posts at top of this forum).

I'm sure they have more accurate information than I do. Conventional
wisdom is to take the Eclipse package that comes closest to what you
want to do, then use Help -> Install New Software to add what's missing.
There may be some problem with this approach specifically in 3.8. The
Eclipse CDT forum should be the last word for C/C++ development in Eclipse.
I'm not certain of the terminology. The platform would surely be Eclipse
IDE for C/C++ Developers. However, what they mean by SDK I don't know.
My original answer was to steer you toward the right forum and tell you
that one of the Eclipse packages should already have most of what you
need--a total newcomers' answer. And, you're question had sat unanswered
by any more C-ish responders.
