Hi all,

The Juno release train should include PDT 3.1, but where is it?

I can't find it either Sad

There is a similar question posted to the mailing list, dev.eclipse.org/mhonarc/lists/pdt-dev/msg02121.html. I now follow this forum thread and the mailing list in the hope that an answer will come in at least one of the places.

On the project page at www.eclipse.org/projects/project.php?id=tools.pdt it states that 3.1 should be released 23. of June, but a part from a few updates on that page, everything there seems utterly outdated.

I'm used to Eclipse for lot of things but not PHP. I never had so much difficulty to find compatible plug-ins. It's seems that PHP Eclipse support is sub-standard compared to any other plug-ins.

The following Remote Site URL works well, if you want something to work right now -> downloads.zend.com/pdt

It will install PDT 3.01 and will not complain of incompatible library.

Interesting mail from maillist, http://dev.eclipse.org/mhonarc/lists/pdt-dev/msg02123.html

Also, this looks bad, "[pdt-dev] Project meta data is out of date for tools.pdt", see http://dev.eclipse.org/mhonarc/lists/pdt-dev/thrd17.html#02122 (it might just be an automatic system gone wild).

The only thing I am seeing at that site is zend debugger, look in the site.xml file .

Jacek, in that thread you mention an all-in-one build located at www.zend.com/pdt/downloads . However, that link is a "Page not found".

for me it the software manager showed the update icon after adding that url.

maybe you could try to remove 3.0.0 first, and then install 3.1 ?

Also, why are the PDT all-in-one packages gone from eclipse.org?

Your highest priority right now should be to clean up the mess you
created. The PDT project page is ridiculously outdated, sources are
still using CVS, there seems to be almost no communication, community
involvement does not seem to exist.

Other PHP IDE solution are leaving PDT in their dust...

PDT used to be cool, unfortunately I feel there's not enough going on
anymore which is said since I like Eclipse as a whole a lot.

Probably not the most constructive way to talk to someone about a product which is available for free.

Anyway, if you want to follow the latest developments around PDT, you should checkout the pdt-dev mailing list

Also, reporting an outdated project page would probably get more attention in bugzilla than in a community forum.

Whats the best way to get 3.1?

Download and install "Eclipse Classic" and use the update site http://download.eclipse.org/tools/pdt/updates/3.1.1/nightly?

Or should I use the "Eclipse for Testers" because its smaller in size?

Or is there a better way?

Thanks for helping hands...

probably, but whose fault is it that such issues arise?

IMO Zend could (should) have done more to build up a community around
this great project. Then we'd have people care about PDT and its
development outside of Zend too...

Isn't that what Open Source is about?

I'm installing in Juno from the nightly now... if you have dependency problems, click Back then make sure you're installing BOTH runtime and SDK.

But the state of PDT is pretty bad. I would try something else, but I work in many languages and my employer provides me with a slow laptop (Celeron Sad), so I'm not keen on running multiple IDEs. Plus I like Eclipse. Eclipse is good to great in every category OTHER than what PDT provides.

It seems like Zend could still convince people to switch to Zend Studio for the server integration and such without having to make PDT so crappy. Seriously, who would be willing to shell out any money to buy Studio after having used PDT? Why should anyone expect Studio to be any better? If people instead decide that Zend is doing it on purpose to drive sales, that just leaves a bad taste in the mouth and makes one just as unwilling to purchase.

I'd say it seemed like a very poor business model, but they prolly make up for it with bulk corporate licensing. So it's just small business employees and contractors who get screwed.

Ok, sorry about that. /end rant

@Ingo Renner / Ryan P:

I agree about the lack of focus from Zend on PDT in the past, but i have a different approach in actually improving the situation. We (a couple of other PDT extenders and me) have started efforts to build a central PDT extension platform where we focus on community-based plugins around PDT.

The PDT devs, Zend and also the eclipse foundation is supporting these efforts, so if we get enough motivated people on board, the situation can improve rapidly in the future.

You are very welcome to join our discussion:

https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/pdt-extensions-platform
https://github.com/PHPsrc/wiki/wiki

We can use help in any form. Be it code contributions, documentation, writing blogs posts, etc.

Bernhardt,

It seems PDT has now been added to the Juno update site.
You can use the standard Juno install from the Eclipse homepage, then install 'PDT SDK' from the standard Juno update site. (From Help ->Install New Software)

The PDT section on eclipse.org has always been mess, ever since I can remember. It shouldn't be this difficult to have a very basic PDT section=, keep it simple and start small.

But let me try and give some constructive rather than bash the project.

This is the PDT [homepage](http://www.eclipse.org/projects/project.php?id=tools.pdt).

What's wrong with it and what can be done to fix it?
----------------------------------------------------

Definitions:

- Home Page means the PDT home page http://www.eclipse.org/projects/project.php?id=tools.pdt

For a start, the big diagrams of stats "Overall Commit Activity", "Committer Activity", "Organization Commit Activity" are overkill and frankly who cares. Put them in the aside or at the bottom.

No introduction? I don't mean a 10 page essay. One or two meaningless paragraphs is fine, and people general expect some meaningless introduction, it seems out of place when we don't see one.

The "Tools Projects" & "Top Level Projects" links in the left aside are misleading and confusing. They assume too much. What's the difference between a "Top Level Project" & "Tools Project". Personally, I havn't a clue, and probably don't care either. Remove them, add a link "Other Projects" which should land on an "Other Projects" entry page with an introduction (the customary two paragraphs) and explaination of what the a tool project is, how plugins work, etc. the general architecture of eclipse and overview of what it is and how the tools fit in with it.

The source repository is now on the page. It should be further down the page, but above the statistics charts.

The [software repository](http://download.eclipse.org/tools/pdt/updates) is widly out of date. Open it, it has PDT SDK 1.0.3 -> 1.0.5.

The introduction part of the **Software Repository** also says things like "This project maintains a p2 repository of binary artifacts", who the hell know what that means. "Note that the repository link will not necessarily display anything meaningful in your browser" That should be a link to common eclipse page about software repositories.

The **Releases** section doesn't have a "Latest", i.e. the most current stable version. There's also only one link, 2.1.0, is that the latest? 3.0.0 and 3.1.0 say completed? Are you confused? I am. The little calendar icon link for "3.0.0 completed" is a 404. The calendar icon link for the 2.1.0 links to a page, a double wammy, the page **PDT Project Plan for 2.0 Release**, note the 2.0 not 2.1 and tells you it was last revised on 2008/11/27 23:00:06.

Delete all thise links. Better no links than those.

The reviews section is good and though I have my issues with the mailing lists, the Communications section is good.

I don't see the value in the Committer Tools in the left aside. At the very least it should just be one link and not a section and a link and should also probably just be called **IP Log**, so

The PDT Incubator under the "PDT Development Tools" on the left aside has 2 links on the next page. One to a review and in the top right aside there is a "What is incubation" link hiding under the egg image. Condense it. It doesn't need to be section and then a link. Probably doesn't need to be on this page either.

The links in the top left look good. Rename "Website" to "Home"

### Now, start from top down

1. Three sections are fine: Source Repositories, Reviews & Communications. Remove everything else from the middle column and add an introduction:

1. Introduction (TODO)
2 or 3. Communications
3 or 2. Source Respositories

2. Move the stat charts to the right aside below the contributors lists.

3. Remove the the "Tools Projects" & "Top Level Projects" from the left aside.

4. Rename "IP Log Generator" to "IP Log", remove the header "Committer Tools" and move the remaining link up under the "Downloads" link in the top left.

5. "PDT Incubator" and it's link can probably be moved to the wiki, however if it must stay: Rename "PDT Incubator" to "Incubation", remove the header "PDT Development Tools" and move the remaining link up under the "Downloads" (or what will now be the "IP Log" link, see 5) link in the top left.

Downloads
---------

http://www.eclipse.org/pdt/downloads/

The downloads page is a nightmare. There's too much for me go through.

Remove the "Release Notes link in the top right http://www.eclipse.org/pdt/news/relnotes.php?project=pdt&version=HEAD. It's useless.

Remove the The "Archives" link, that's useless too.

Where's the latest download.

Can't do it.

Delete **everything** from this page except for **PDT Developer Builds**. That section is fine.

"Getting the sources" in the right aside is redundant, see the pdt home page. It has links to CVS, and downbloads and wildly out of date update site links. If there is any links move them to the **Source Repositories** on the home page.

Remove the "Sort" and "By Date" link in the bottom right aside, it doesn't do anything.

Move any useful links in the left aside or the right aside to the top left aside on the homepage. e.g. FAQ.

In fact. Do away with this page alltogether. Move any aside links to the top left of the home page and move any of the content in the center column to a **Downloads** section on the home. It's not as though there's a lot. And that's one less page to maintain.

I'm afraid I can't do more. How do I get permission to make these changes myself?

Zend?

Zend are doing a good job in my opinion. A very good job.

A case in point: The first 3 links on the pdt download page are to zend.com. There's even a link to zend server. Do you know how many links there are back from zend? 1. It is the very last on the zend community pdt download page, of which is preceded by no less than 10 other links.

That's impressive. Zend have no obligation to eclipse, nor should they.

awesome feedback... i was thinking the same about each of the parts of the PDT page everytime i was there Wink

However i think that some of the stuff like the commit graphs are being an autogenerated eclipse project homepage. Not sure how much customization the pdt team can make there.
