Problem with WordML preview (version 0.4.0) [message #10796] Sat, 24 January 2009 20:10 Go to next message

Hi!

I am trying out OSEE version 0.4.0. I am experiencing problem with the
Word 2003 XML file preview and Word file editing. The Word version is 2003
SP3.
The error message I get in the workspace (Eclipse) is:

Warning: Word content preview generation is not supported on this platform.

When trying to edit the word file, it shows up empty. If I write something
in it, the change is reflected to the artefact.

Obviously I have done something wrong with installation but don't know how
to correct it. I am not sure how to install those additional add-on
feature listed in http://osee.microdoc.com/node/2. According to the text
xslt.transform.engine.feature should enable you preview the word files.
What is the correct way of installing those add-ons? I have now copied
those into eclipse/plugin directory. The software update system does not
accept those jar-files as input.

All help appreciated!

Ari

I have made progress in this. I figured out the right way of typing in the
update site address to make Eclipse find those archive packets (jar) and
hopefully install them correctly.

I still have the problem of having no text in the Word document when I
open an imported requirement for editing. When typing something in, the
previous text is all gone.

Ari

Hi Ari,

“Warning: Word content preview generation is not supported on this
platform”

This warning means that you were given the DefaultWordMLConversionHandler,
therefore the xslt.transform.engine.feature is not properly installed. The
All-In-One framework download should have contained this feature. I will
download and install the All-In-One and confirm that is contains the
necessary features.

However, you can update this feature from the following URL:
http://osee.microdoc.com/downloads/osee/add-ons/0.4/updatesi te/.

1) Select Help
2) Software Updates …
3) Then select the Available Software tab.
4) Then Add site. Next enter the above URL

If you have anymore issues let us know.
Thanks, Jeff

Hi Ari,

Just to clarify the issue, is it the case that a newly imported
requirement artifact does not have any content? Furthermore, if you try to
edit the requirement are your changes being saved?

A couple of things to look into:

1) When you have the artifact opened for edit can you see mark-up tags
around the content? (ctrl+shift+x should toggle their visibility)
2) After you have changed the text and saved the document do you see a new
entry in the resource history view? (Right click on the artifact in the
artifact explorer and select show resource history). Every time you make a
change to the artifact a new entry should occur with corresponding time
and date.
3) What is the type of the artifact? From the Artifact Explorer if you
select the triangle menu selection in the right hand corner you will see a
menu item “Show Artifact Type”.

Hi!

Thanks for answering my questions. Here are the answers:

> Just to clarify the issue, is it the case that a newly imported
> requirement artifact does not have any content? Furthermore, if you try to
> edit the requirement are your changes being saved?

I can import word documents and split them into artifacts. I can now also
see the preview in the eclipse window. If I edit the artifact, the word
document looks empty (no xml tags, even with ctrl+shift+x). If I write
something in it and save it, then this text will replace the earlier
requirement text. Thus, I cannot see the text in Word file, but I can
produce new one and overwrite it ot the OSEE.

> A couple of things to look into:

> 1) When you have the artifact opened for edit can you see mark-up tags
> around the content? (ctrl+shift+x should toggle their visibility)

No, there does not seem to be those. When I edit the word template in
Common branch, then I can see the xml-tags in the word file.

> 2) After you have changed the text and saved the document do you see a new

Yes, I do, it says that the word content has changed.

> 3) What is the type of the artifact? From the Artifact Explorer if you

I have tried "system requirement" and "software requirement" among others,
that can have word content.

To me it looks like that OSEE side is ok now, as it can send out files and
take the input back. Maybe the problem is at Word side. Do I need to have
some xslt or schema installed for parsing the XML file the OSEE is
sending. Sorry for my incompetence in XML...

Ari

PS: If I get OSEE and Word working together, my next worry will be
creating templates for reporting the content of OSEE. I am seriously
studying the system for applying it for my work. All help would be greatly
appreciated!

Ari,

Which executable are you using to run OSEE, oseePostgresMicroc.exe or
oseeDbInitLocal.exe?

Just to clarify, did you say that you edited the template artifacts on the
common branch? If so, what changes did you make. It is possible to alter
the templates in such a way that the artifact content will not be
displayable from Word.

We are happy that you are interested in OSEE and will provide support to
assist you in your analysis for your company.

I have tried out both of them, neither version works when trying to edit
the artifacts with Word 2003. Is there some particular Service pack needed
for Word. I have currently SP3.

Nope, I have not altered the template files, I have just opened them up
for editing but did not save them. I just wanted to chech the content of
those and they showed up with the XML markup tags.

Would there be any other source for additional information. In order to
adapt the system (report templates) suitable for our system, we need to
get the Word files work first ok.

Do you have any previous experience on Word difficulties? I will next try
resetting word to factory reset state and reinstall the OSEE as well.

Jeff,

Neither resetting the Word editor and installing the OSEE system from
scratch (including installation of two additional modules) did not solve
the problem.

When I create an artifact and edit it, Word shows an empty file (zero
characters according to properties). When I type in text and save it, it
appears in the preview, and I can also open the document in preview mode.
When I reopen the artifact for editing, the file is again empty and all I
write and save shall overwrite the previous content of the artifact.

I did these experiments with the local database (first initialize it and
then executing the OSEE locally). I could not connect the server in
internet, so I could not test that.

Any ideas, how to proceed? Are there any settings in Word I should take
into account (security settings, for example?).

Sorry for multi-part post along the debugging process...

I looked at the attributes of the newly created software requirement.
The attribute "Word Template Content" is empty. The tip says that it
should comply with the WordML xml schema. What does this mean, am I
missing some attribute value? I cannot edit the attribute value, though.

We have created a new all-in-one install based on the most recent OSEE
code (from the trunk branch in SVN). You can download it from
http://osee.microdoc.com/downloads/osee/all-in-one/0.7/all-i n-one-0.7.0_2009-02-12.zip.
This install is based on the Eclipse 3.4.1 for Windows and will allow you
to initialize a local database with sample data and run your own OSEE
application server and OSEE client. The step-by-step instructions are
available at http://osee.microdoc.com/node/2 under the "All-In-One"
Section, under the heading "Manually Initialize Local Database".
