I have some thoughts, please forgive me that I'm not too deep into
equinox. From what I can see I have no doubt that equinox can become
"the" application platform of the future for everything on a java VM.
Now we have a growing count applications running on the equinox or rcp
platform. All I can see is that every app comes with its own OSGI
runtime. I don't think this is the idea behind the platform.
What I would like to see is
a standalone installation thats decoupled from eclipse that supports say
the p2 installer.
Just imagine one could provide an app installer that looks if equinox is
already on the system, installs it if not. then it points to a
preconfigured update site where I provide my app, downloads it, and
integrates the app in an os dependent way so that it integrates nicely
with the users os. If we then go further and webstart the installer we
have something I would like to see. I believe that we need a really good
user experience to make a win.
One of the most cited arguments I hear when it comes to "why did you
make this a web application" is the deployment problem. With equinox we
could solve that transparently.
