profiler not working [message #106462] Wed, 25 July 2007 11:37 Go to next message

Hi,

I'm trying to use the profiler but it's not working. I've done everything
that's described in the getting started document.

I've downloaded the new technology agent. I've set it up.
Installed tptp.
Installed jvmti in the new tech. agent plugins dir.

The error I get when I test availability is:

the jvmti agent org.eclipse.tptp.jvmti is not available. Make sure that the
libraries for the agent are available and that it is configured properly.

I've already checked the newsgroups for this error and I did get some
entries. I tried the solutions given but still nothing.

For now I'm just trying to profile a simple hello world to get it working.

Another question:
What I really want to do is to understand another plugin (MDT/uml2tools)
using the profiler. To see which methods and classes are being called when I
do certain actions.
This is possible with the profiler right?

thx in advance,
Nick

Nick,

In order to help, we need the following information:
- Exact Eclipse version
- Exact TPTP version
- Operating system and architecture
- Exact Java version

In TPTP 4.4, the profiler is available "out of the box" using an
integrated Agent controller. Just install the "TPTP all plugins" package
(from the TPTP web page) to a clean Eclipse 3.3 and you are ready to go.

The profiler supports profiling of Eclipse plugins. More information is
available in the on-line help.

Asaf

Hi,

I have installed eclipse 3.3 and tptp 4.4. And it says it can't find the
agent controller on port 10006. I have changed the port to 10006. still
nothing.

I use windows and java 1.5. all pretty standard.

I also tried the all in one bundle and that doesn't work either.

Could you explain what I have to do to install the all in one bundle and
get the profiling working from there?
Do I have to do anything for the integrated agent controller to work or
does it work automatically?

oh one more thing,

When I run the all in one package, go to preferences , check connection
availability of the hosts on port 10002 and 10006 and the whole thing
hangs on me and I have to restart eclipse! How is that possible? I have
opened up the ports in the firewall.

regards,

Nick

I get the same situation- sometimes.

I find that if I ignore this and profile anyway, it will at least run.

Sometimes, the Monitor tab choices change: the pre-1.5 choices disappear
and the "test availability" works.

Maybe you have to do a profile before the agent is launched????

Nick,

Have you tried using the standalone Agent Controller (not the default
"integrated" Agent Controller)? It can be downloaded from the TPTP
download page. Once downloaded, refer to its Readme file for setup and
configuration information.

Hi,

Yeah I've tried that as well.

But I thought that was the whole point about 4.4 : so that you can use the
integrated one.

I seem to get the same error with the integrated one and the standalone
one.
Error is the cannot find library org.eclipse.tptp.jvmti.
I've looked at the standard solutions for this error and still nothing.

Nick
