Acceptance testing and RCP applications [message #104799] Fri, 13 July 2007 20:05 Go to next message

Is anybody else out there trying to do Acceptance testing of their RCP
applications? I'm trying to discover what the options are - but the
field seems very thin.

1) Roll you own framework - As a side project I went down this path a
few months back. I got stuck at the beginning - I could launch my
application - but once launched my test harness couldn't regain control.
Even if I can get this to work I going to have to extend each SWT/JFace
control with additional test methods. That sounds like hard work.
2) Marathon doesn't appear to have any SWT support.
3) Abbot there are some murky references
( http://dev.eclipse.org/mhonarc/lists/tptp-testing-tools-dev/ msg00157.html)
and this wiki entry:
http://abbot.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Abbot#to_work_fr om_Eclipse_with_a_standalone_SWT_UI.
There are no mentions of SWT on the Abbot website.
However neither Abbot nor its website have been updated since Oct 06. Is
it dead?
4) Window Tester from Instantiations:
http://www.instantiations.com/windowtester/index.html promises a Rich
GUI Test Library. For $499 a seat this could be a great tool. Does
anyone have any experience using it? Does it deliver the value?
5) FrogLogic SquishJava
http://www.froglogic.com/pg?id=Google&category=squishjav a 800 EUR - cute
name appears to be tied to a vendor script (yeeccch).

So is anyone doing automated acceptance testing of Eclipse RCP apps (not
recording scripts - but writing test cases)? What tools are you using?

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,
The AGR in TPTP will be supporting RCP applications in the near future:

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=114159

Please feel free to monitor/comment/contribute to this enhancement.

Thanks Paul I've been monitoring this enhancement for over a year now.
I've become a bit cynical about this one - it keeps getting pushed back
to the future.

Cheers

Hi Mark,
I can appreciate your point of view. We acknowledge that this is one of
the most important enhancements for the AGR and will be given top priority
in the next release plan, given the staffing resources allocated to the AGR.
We are also working a contributor to secure a partial or full contribution
for this enhancement. We would appreciate any assistance you or your
company could provide, including defect fixes and testing.

Sorry I sounded a bit cynical - my problem we need to start writing
acceptance tests for our Eclipse applications now. In the future I will
do my best to use and test AGR. But its unlikely to be a top priority.

Cheers
