Hi everybody,

I'm Ilaria Manno of the CoFFEE developers team.
Since the reciprocal interest and the similar (educational) context of
CoFFEE and IDE4EDU,
we are proud to announce also to IDE4EDU folks a new release (version 4.1)
of CoFFEE software,
downloadable at http://www.coffee-soft.org/
You can find a description of the new features and a brief description of
CoFFEE software at the end of the post.
Enjoy a CoFFEE!

=========================
What's new in version 4.1

- New tools
2 new tools have been added:
- Internet Explorer Tool: allows each student to navigate the World Wide
Web through a standard browser. It offers the standard functionalities of
a (private) browser, but also the opportunity for the teacher to provide a
"follow-me" mechanism.
- Document Browser Tool: the Document Browser tool is an HTTP server that
allows the teacher to share documents with the classroom; students can
open the documents and browse the links that are eventually present in
them.

- Activity indicators
The teacher can now monitor the activity level of the students in real
time. Near the name of each student there is an icon indicating the level
of partecipation to the discussion (red = low, green = medium, blue =
high), based on the number of messages sent in his/her group in the
current step. By selecting a students, the teacher can see in details the
number of messages sent in each tool and the percentage of messages sent
in the group.

- "Fully anonymous" behaviour
In the Chat Tool and the Threaded Discussion Tool the teacher can activate
a "fully anonymous" behaviour: in this case teacher cannot see the names
of the students and the report (PDF/RTF/HTML) does not bring information
about the names of the contributors. The identity is, however, still
present in the traces/logs.

- Hebrew nationalization
CoFFEE has been (partially) nationalized in Hebrew language, and (partial)
support for right-to-left widgets has been added.

============================
CoFFEE

CoFFEE (Cooperative Face2Face Educational Environment) is an educational
software for co-located (face2face) group collaboration in
computer-mediated problem solving. It allows the whole classroom to
collaborate synchronously, so that the problem-solving activity can happen
in a structured way, with evoluted graphical tools and through a sequence
of steps. The teacher can plan the collaborative activity either by using
pre-configured "sessions" or by planning his/her own sessions. During each
step, the activity can be shared by the whole classroom or organized in
groups. At any time, every single contribution of the student to the
shared workspace is immediately visible to the other students.

Several tools are available. Among the most important ones there is the
Threaded Discussion Tool, which allows the students to discuss within a
structured (forum-like) chat, where the contributions are positioned in
branches of the tree in the logical order of the discussion. Each
contribution can be tagged (with a schema provided by the tacher) in order
to help the consciousness of the contribution from the student (for
example, the schema could be "Question", "Answer", "Evidence", "Comment").
Another tool for discussion is the Graphical Tool, in which the students
are provided with a shared workspace to trace argumentative diagrams,
estabilish links, organize the discussion in a graphical way. Other tools
available are a shared editor, a "regular" chat, a repository for file
sharing, a private notes tool.

In each step up to 5 tools can be used, and each tool can be present both
in public (shared by all) and in private mode, so that the student can
build and reflect on his/her own before/during/after the shared
discussion.

DOWNLOAD
The software is downloadable at http://www.coffee-soft.org/

To manage expectations, be advised that this group exists currently to
develop community around the IDE4EDU project proposal. IDE4EDU is
currently a component of the SOC project and we're in the process of
changing that. My point is that the audience for this newsgroup is
currently very small.

As part of the proposal process, we're collecting the names of
"interested parties". By adding your name to the list, you are
expressing that you find the project interesting and feel that there may
be some potential to contribute to the project in some way (though this
is not binding).

Can we add you to the list of interested parties for the proposal?

Thanks,

Wayne

Hi, Wayne. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Of course, what Ilaria and I would like is to be cited as interested
parties in IDE4EDU. As a matter of fact, what we would find stimulating is
the possibility to add the IDE4EDU the collaboration among students and
with the teacher, and would be very much interested in providing an
efficient and effective way of using CoFFEE tools into IDE4EDU.

So, cite both of us as interested parties... (or, if you wish, you can
cite the CoFFEE team as intereste party and place me as contact person)

In the meantime, we are anyway exploring the possibility to launch CoFFEE
tools in the Eclipse workbench, so we'll keep you (and the IDE4EDU
proposal) updated on that.

Sorry again if our posting was not totally appropriate.

Your posting was not inappropriate. I just wanted to make sure that you
undestood the state of the project. Which is to say that it hasn't been
created yet. Effectively, this newsgroup will probably be pretty low
volume for a while...

Thanks for your involvement in the project.
