In the next STEM build, the method for modifying the initial population data (if desired) has changed. Most of the human population data available in STEM was extracted from census data from 2006. Previously, if you wanted to modify the number to reflect more accurate data for say 2012 in some region, you added a standard population model with a calibrated background birth rate and death rate, and STEM would automatically change the initial population given the start time of the sequencer.

This was confusing to the user and sometimes resulted in unexpected behavior. We replaced it with a more explicit method by giving an 'initial rescaling factor' parameter to all population models. By default it's 1.0, but it can be modified to scale the population with any desired factor before starting a simulation.
