Hi,

I posted this question in another thread, but it was suggested to inquire here instead. I (and others I have spoken with) have noticed that the speed of scrolling in the main text editor is quite sluggish compared to other operating systems. I tried looking at bug reports, but the ones I found are a couple years old. If I hold the up/down key on a source file, the scrolling will continue for a few seconds after I release the key.

This behavior is not exclusive to the java editor, as it also happens when viewing source with the plain text editor in eclipse.

Most suggestions I have read when searching for this have indicated increasing the memory size, but this does not seem to help at all. The only thing that appears to help is reducing the size of the editor; if the visible area is small, the scrolling is very smooth. It gets progressively slower when the editor area is increased.

I should also note that I am seeing Eclipse use 60-70% of CPU (from activity monitor) when I am scrolling on OS X, which seems absurdly high. This is on a 2011 Core i7 2.2 Ghz.

Hi,

Are you using the Carbon or Cocoa port of eclipse? Which version of eclipse are you using?
May be you are seeing this bug https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=282229, but this has been fixed in eclipse 3.6.

I am using 3.7.1 (Cocoa) 32-bit (for OSGi + Swing, since it won't work with 64-bit). The scrolling in 64-bit is no different, though.

The scrolling is actually smoother if I run Eclipse in a Windows virtual machine on the same Mac computer.

Hi experts,

I'm using 3.7.1 Cocoa 64bit on Mac Book Air 2011. I have the same issue with justin.
Please take a look.
I think it could be a general issue.

Thanks in advance

Hi experts,

I am trying to narrow down the issue a little bit.
I found if I turned off "show whitespace characters" option under Text Editors, the performance is improved a lot.

But in Windows, everything work well. Therefore, to me it's a Mac specific issue.

Best wishes,
Oliver

Hi,

Please open a bug under SWT here --> https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/enter_bug.cgi?product=Platform&component=SWT so that it can be investigated. Thanks!
