PHP perspective changes discussion [message #83372] Tue, 11 November 2008 12:02 Go to next message

Hi All,

As you have noticed probably, we have changed the way PHP perspective
appears a couple of weeks ago.
From now the default layout does not contain "PHP Functions" and "PHP
Project Outline" views anymore.
This was done in order to imrpove performance while working in PHP
perspective, since these views are a liitle bit resource-intensive.

I'm appealing to you with the question: Are these views where useful to
anybody, or nobody will pay an attention if they disappear?

Thanks for your help!

PS: just for a reminder, views can be opened via "Window -> Show View" menu.
Perspective can be reset to its defaults via "Window -> Reset
perspective..." menu option.

I don't use those at all, so I don't mind. I usually close them when I
see them.

I have 3 tabs: they are Outline, "PHP Functions" and "PHP Project
Outline" views. I actually only use Outline frequently, so this is the
one which is always active. I could offload the others but since they
don't occupy space I didn't feel the urge to close them. I have a fast
machine, only startup is really slow.

Michael,

Ironically, that was indeed one of the first things I noticed. :) But, no
big deal, opening the views is easy. For first time users I'm betting the
startup time is more noticeable than missing views.

At first I didn't notice any difference at all. But after closing the
perspective and reopening it... yeah, big difference :-)
I never used those views anyway, so yeah, it looks less cluttered than it
did.
My outline seems to have stopped working though... maybe a rebuild is in
order... nope, just had to close and reopen the files that were already
open.
Anywho... much nicer IMO.

It's right choice to hide them, i've never used them (they're not that
useful in PHP) and if it has any performance boost, go for it. I don't
miss those panels.
