Search results window always on top [message #723126] Wed, 07 September 2011 13:38 Go to next message

Is it possible to get the search results window to behave as any other window ?

After searching, the window comes up and stays on top. As long as Eclipse is the active application, the search results window is always on top. I can't get it to go behind the editor window.

I am using Version: Helios Service Release 2
Build id: 20110218-0911

Is the Search Window detached i.e. you can move it outside of the Eclipse window?

Yes I can move the window outside of the editor window itself.

I am unable to view the full editor window unless I re-size it so that the search results window does not overlap it.

I understand I can simply move the search results window so far to one side that it only takes up 1/4 inch of my desktop and I'd still be able to get back to it.

A bit awkward to do though.

I'd prefer that the search results window was treated as any other window.

Yes I can move the window outside of the editor window itself.

Then the window is detached. Open the context menu of this window (right click on the title bar) and unselect "Detached".

I think there is a misunderstanding.

I WANT DETACHED.

I want a full size editor window and I want a search results window that I can set to any size I want. I want to be able to view the FULL editor window - implying the search results window is BEHIND the editor window.

If I unselect detached the search window and the editor window share the desktop space. NOT what I want. Worse actually then my current state.

Please explain more clearly what it is your saying if I got something wrong.

Thanks for your input.

... let me explain another way. Windows apps. MS Word and MS Internet Explorer.
I can open Word and Explorer and set them both to occupy the full height of my desktop and 1 inch less then the full width. I set one to the left and one to the right. They are independent windows. I click on one and it comes into full view. I move the mouse over to the other one that has 1 inch of it exposed and click on that portion. It then comes fully into view.

I can't help but think that was the intent of the Eclipse developers - to have the search results window be a window manageable independently from the main editor window.

Non-detached is one way of doing what I want ... except for the fact that it is in the opposite direction from what I want - it's farther away from the goal - not closer. I understand a non-detached search results window can be sized, minimized, etc. It is simply NOT THE SAME as a independent window. Perhaps I am just not giving a good example.

I think my explanation should be clear in the fact that the detached search results window is ALWAYS on top of ALL OTHER windows WHEN the Eclipse application is the active application. I think that is plain STUPID. If that is the way the code is written, and that is the way it is supposed to work, then oh well to bad for me.

I tend to doubt this it the case though.

OK .... I want the search results window to be manageable just as the help window is. It has a checkbox "Always on top". I check that and is is ALWAYS ON TOP.

The search results window also has a "Always on top" check box. I check that box and it is ALWAYS ON TOP. I un-check that box and it is ALWAYS ON TOP.

I therefore suspect this is a bug. To submit I bug I need a new user name, password, authorization, certification etc. I'll get to work on that.

When you want a full size editor you should use Eclipse maximize option. Double-click on a window title bar or press Ctrl-M.

I appreciate your attempting to help, however, I believe the statement "When you want a full size editor you should use Eclipse maximize option. Double-click on a window title bar or press Ctrl-M." shows that you do not understand my concern. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THE EDITOR WINDOW.

The issue is the search results window. It is always on top. I do not know what else I can say to make my point any clearer.

If the search results window can only be viewed as a sub window of the main window OR as a detached window that is always in front (why ?) then I can not accomplish my wish. If the detached window is ALWAYS on top then why the hell have a check box "Always on top" ????

That has led me to believe there was a bug. By having the "Always on top" check box on a window that is designed to always be in top, your inviting confusion and frustration.

WAWOMFT !!!

The always on top checkbox, ( I believe ) is part of the windowing system. Not part of eclipse. For example, on my windows system there is no "always on top check box" on the disconnected search pane., I suppose it would be _possible_ for the generic eclipse window manager to be able to detect the system specific window manager and disable that button (possibly) but it does not seem to be the purview of eclipse application to do so.

I have the same issue as the original poster, but with ANY view. For some reason, someone on the Eclipse team thought this "feature" would be a great idea, but it's really not, as it deviates from normal, expected window behavior on every known platform. Forcing the user to resize the window so there's no overlap with the parent feels like a Windows 1.0-era kluge.

Let me try to explain it using workflow familiar to all of us: sending an email using virtually any GUI email client that opens up a modeless window for a "new email". For this sequence, I'll use Microsoft Outlook:
1) Open Outlook.
2) Create a "new email". This creates a new, modeless window for the new email, which appears in the foreground, covering part of the main Outlook window.
3) Work on "new email" for a while, before realizing other information is needed from a different email. Click on visible part of main Outlook window to get that information. This brings the main Outlook window to the foreground, covering part of the new email window.
4) After retrieving information from main Outlook window, click on the visible part of "new email" window. This brings the "new window" to the foreground, covering part of the main Outlook window again.

Now, I understand that this issue was reported in January 2006 and subsequently marked as "Won't Fix" 1-1/2 years later (Bug 123400), so I don't have any hope of getting a resolution from the team, but if anyone out there can tell me exactly HOW the always-on-top behavior is being implemented, maybe I can code a workaround to make my own views that respect standard modeless child window behavior.
