Hyades Vs STAF/STAX [message #6930] Tue, 22 February 2005 05:41 Go to next message

Hi!
I’m using STAF and STAX for my testing purposes for a couple of years now.
Though, I’m quite impressed about the capabilities of STAF and STAX (esp.,
when I use them together), I’ve been assigned the task of researching the
capabilities of Hyades to verify if the latter can replace the former. I’m
afraid; I’m quite new to the latter! Therefore, I’m looking forward to
have some inputs from you all!

I’d really appreciate if you could throw some light on the following
viewpoints:-

1. What I’m looking from Hyades is that it is a tool, which should enable
me to do at least the following:
a. Helps me to build a common test environment (something like STAF env)
such that one machine can request/provide service to another machine. I’m
not sure if this can be done easily?
{In STAF: we can just add the TRUST LEVEL and configure the same network
interface (TCP/IP)}

b. Is there any mechanism in Hyades, with which I can write the “test
workflow” –this is something like what we write using STAX XML?
{In STAX: we can execute testcases in a conditional way. This is possible
because, STAX provides rich amount programming capabilities}

c. I’m not sure if I can execute all executables from within Hyades?
{In STAX: we can use <process> to execute any executable and if required
we can even define env such as PATH, CLASSPATH, etc.. Besides, it does
provide whole lot of options}

2. Is it possible to strip off ‘Eclipse IDE’ from the Hyades –this is
because, considering my requirement, I don’t want any such IDE. In fact,
having such an IDE will increase my testing environment.

3. Does Hyades supports any scripting language? Something like what STAX
supports Jython as the scripting language.

4. Is it true that STAF has some security loop-holes –and which is not
there with Hyades?

5. Can you please draw some comparison between STAF and Hyades ---esp.,
from the Testing perspective? Perhaps the comparison parameters could be:
maturity, security, ease-of-use/productivity, capability, portability,
support, etc.

Thanks, in advance!

Regards,
Tharma

I don't really have an answer for your questions but I am interested in
that subject.
I don't know very well Hyades and STAF. Nonetheless my impression was
that STAF overlaps with the RACServer (and the client side) but is a lot
more flexible and extensible.
Hyades to me seems really good for the client side to trigger test and
present traces, log and results.

Would it make sense to try to integrate STAF with Hyades? I would think
so but I am lacking knowledge of Hyades for my opinion to be valuable :)
Does anyone know if it seems reasonable to do that and how difficult it
would be?
