I am running Eclipse Indigo on a Windows 7 box and I often experience a total hang of my environment while the status line shows

"Updating duplicate resource: '/.org.eclipse.jdt.core.external.folders/.link1/<path>'"

where <path> is some file in my source tree. For example, I am currently experiencing this exact problem while typing this message after issuing a Save command for a file I had edited. It's been hung for several minutes. What causes this?

Take a stack trace (see
http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/How_to_report_a_deadlock )and report
it in a bug.

Okay, fair enough, I can do that.

One question though. I often see Eclipse reporting that it is doing some kind of processing related to these external folders. What exactly are these?
